Title: Blizzard: Surprise in the Snow Author: Heather Nabers, HLNabers@charlotte.uncc.edu, and Abi Raja, AbiRani@aol.com Summary: Anything can happen when the JAG staff is snowed in with a pregnant woman. Disclaimer: Skip over if you know the drill, if not read on. Guess what? An equal number of people in this story are figments of our imagination as are figments of someone else's! Wow! So technically we could make money off of half the character in this story...but who would pay us? Never mind...just read! (Drum roll, please?) Blizzard: Surprise in the Snow "Hasn't it stopped snowing yet?", a grumpy Sarah Mackenzie asked from her seat on the floor. "I don't know.", an equally grumpy Harmon Rabb Jr. answered from next to her. "This is great! The first long weekend I get in...I don't know how long, and I'm snowed in at the office!", Mac stood up and began to pace around the bullpen. "Don't waste your energy pacing. May be we'll get overtime!" "Get real, sailor." "Come on Mac. Even if it is keeping us from getting home, it is beautiful." "Yeah, maybe it is, but I had plans tonight and now I'm stuck here with you." She realized what she had just said and grinned. "Sorry. Didn't mean it like that." It was too late for apologies though. Harm picked her up, threw her over his broad shoulder and took her outside. Once outside, he dropped her on the soft floor of snow and laughed. "Very funny, Flyboy." She tried to get up and couldn't. "Give me a hand please?" "No way. If I give you my hand, you're going to pull me down." Mac sighed. "I will not. Just help me up. I'm getting wet and cold." Against his better judgment, Harm gave her his hand and she did what he was expecting. She pulled him down next to her. "You trust me? Tsk tsk...", she shook her head at him.. "Of course I trust you, Mac.", Harm said sweetly, he stood to help her up. She accepted his hand and turned to go inside. Harm picked up a bit of snow and followed her. Just as she opened the door, he slipped it into her shirt. "AHHHH", Mac screamed. "Ma'am are you O.K.?", Bud Roberts stuck his head out the door, looking very concerned. "She's fine, Bud.", Harm told him, smile in his eyes. “We were just coming back in." "Ok sir. Just checking." Bud smiled and went back to Harriet. Mac and Harm were still laughing and they both went into her office. Mac groaned and pulled the back of her shirt away from her skin. "Thank you, Harm. Now I'm soaked, cold and I'm starting to get a cold." "For a marine, you complain a lot." Harm said with a smile. Mac glared at him. "Harm, snow is cold and wet. If I get sick, you're gonna take care of me." "Consider it done." He started to go back to his own office and stopped. "When we get out of here, you want to have dinner with me?" "You're payin'." Harm grinned and said, "Sure why not. Anything to keep a jarhead from complaining." He turned and opened the door, and left her office. Once he was gone Mac smiled and bit her lower lip. This night wasn't turning out so bad after all. She went and sat next to Harriet. "How are you feeling?" "As well as can be expected, ma'am.", Harriet answered with a weak smile. "Soon it'll be over and we can all go home." "Ensign, are you talking about the snowstorm or your pregnancy?" "I don't know. I guess it could be taken both ways!!", Harriet grimaced. "Are you sure you're O.K.?", Mac asked. Harriet had been a bit sick the last few days and everyone was worried. "I'm fine. I'm fine. Could you find Bud for me, ma'am?" "Sure, I'll be right back." Harm and Bud were in Harm's office going over old cases when Mac knocked on the door. "Bud," she said, "Harriet doesn't feel to well. She’s asking for you." Bud looked at Harm. "Sir?" "Go." Bud nodded and ran from the office to the bullpen. Mac sat down in an extra chair and looked at her partner. He was about to ask her a question on a case, but a flustered Bud interrupted them. "I...Harriet...uh...Baby...now!" Mac and Harm got the point of his out of breath message and ran to the bullpen. Harriet was sitting on the floor, breathing deeply, in obvious pain. "Sir, Ma'am, the baby is coming now. My water just broke. Harm and Mac looked at each other in awe. Then all of a sudden, she went into "Marine Mode and started spewing out orders. "Harm, go to the men's locker room and get all the towels you can find. Bud, go to the first aid kit and get me some gloves." Harm just stared. "How can you be so in control?" "It's a Marine thing, you wouldn't understand. Now don't just stand there. Do what I say!" Harm and Bud listened and ran off in search of towels and gloves. Mac smiled softly and looked at her friend. "You're going to be okay, Harriet. We're all here for you." Harriet tried to smile through her pain and Mac took a deep breath. This was going to be a long night. "I found the towels.", Harm came running up behind her, with a stack of towels. A second later Bud appeared, first aid kit and box of gloves in hand. "First aid kit and gloves, ma'am." Suddenly a door opened. The doorway was filled with an annoyed- looking Admiral Chegwidden. "What is going on here?" "Um... Sir...um...I'm having a baby...that is...um...I mean....", Bud stuttered, his gaze swinging from Harriet to the Admiral. "What Bud means is, I am having our baby, right now.",Harriet clarified from the floor. She smiled at A.J., just before another contraction hit and she screamed. "You're having the baby now!" A.J. exclaimed. "Here!" Harriet winced in pain. "You don't have much control over these things, sir." "I'm going to go call an ambulance. See if one can get through in this weather." A.J returned to his office and dialed 911. Mac kneeled on the floor with Harm by her side. Bud was letting Harriet squeeze his hand. He would have bruises in the shape of her fingers in the morning. A.J. ran out of his office and looked at the scene before him. "Major, do you know what you're doing?" Her boss asked. "Yes sir. When I was in boot camp, they gave us every kind of emergency training available. I've never done this before, but I do know how. She took a deep breath as she sensed Harriet was having another contraction. "Okay, Harriet. You ready?" The younger woman nodded. "Okay. Lets deliver these babies." A.J. sighed, "That's good because the EMTs won't be here " Bud and Harm looked at him, Harm questioningly, Bud scared to death. "What do you mean sir?", Harm asked. "There's so much snow falling that they can't get the helos into the air and the ambulances are all snow logged. They'll get here as soon as they can.", the Admiral sighed. "Stupid, trying to fly in this weather." "Stupid", Harm echoed. "Can you men stop chattering and help us work?", Harriet screamed. The three stared at her, Harriet never spoke like that to anyone. "I'd listen to her if I were you...", Mac muttered. Harm kneeled beside Mac once again while Bud and A.J. each took their place on Harriet's sides. Harriet looked at her husband and then at her boss. He had become such a wonderful friend and father figure to her. If her own father couldn't be here, she couldn't ask for a better stand in. "Harriet," Mac said. "You’re extremely dilated. I want you to push." Harriet squeezed Bud and AJ’s hands and pushed. Mac and Harm noticed the look on AJ’s face and grinned. It wasn't everyday a former SEAL winced in pain. "Bud, if you ever lay another hand on me, I will have it surgically removed." Bud, nervous, removed his hand from his wife's grasp. She took it back and said, "After I get through this." Bud once again let her squeeze his hand, but she had stopped pushing. Mac looked up. "Harriet, I need you to push again. This time don't stop till I tell you to. She did as she was told and a while late, the cries of the first baby were heard. Harm was in awe of this miracle as he handed Mac a towel to wrap the baby in. "It's a boy," she said. Once she saw her son, Harriet forgot about the labor pain, but the joyous moment was interrupted by another painful contraction. "Here we go again. Last one. You can do it.", Mac said. She handed the baby to Harm who handed him to Bud. Bud just stared at him. "My son.", he whispered. The baby opened his eyes, bright green eyes and Bud's heart melted. "Adam Michael." His reverie was interrupted by the cry of another baby. "It's a girl!", Mac said. She smiled, Harriet started to cry. "Alicia Cameron.", Bud whispered, looking up from his son. Harriet started to sit up but lay back down with a shout. "What's wrong?", Bud asked. "I'm having another contraction. What do you think is wrong?" Bud's eyes widened. "But we were only expecting twins. Not triplets!" Harriet opened her eyes and glared at her somewhat clueless husband. "Obviously the sonogram was wrong. They said those things are inconclusive. And I think it's pretty obvious were not having twins!" "Get ready to push," Harriet. Hopefully, this will be the last time." She did and the third birth was definitely the hardest. After what seemed like forever, they heard a baby's shrill cries. "It's another boy!" Mac said. She cleaned him up and handed the baby to Harm. Bud and the Admiral held Adam and Alicia Cameron in their arms and Harriet was in too much pain. Harm stroked the head of the child in his arms and looked at Mac. She was exhausted, but still beautiful. He leaned forward and brushed a lock of hair off her forehead and locked her eyes with his. Harriet looked at Bud and the little girl now in his arms, to her sons in Harm and AJ's arms. "Thank you Major. I will never be able to repay this, you know." Mac took the baby Harm was holding and looked at his little face. Then she smiled. "As long as the five of you are happy, that’s all I need. Just then, the EMTs rushed in and surveyed the scene. "Did we miss anything?", the EMT asked, wryly. Harriet started to laugh and the babies started to cry. "I'd say so, Shane.", the woman behind him answered with a grin. Hank rolled his eyes and moved toward Harriet. He took a quick look at the babies and then at Harriet. He gestured to the woman and she knelt next to Mac. "Who delivered these babies?" "I did.", Mac said. "Did you know what you were doing?", she asked seriously pulling on a pair of gloves. "No, not at all.", Mac answered honestly. "Rose, she was damned lucky nothing went wrong. With three little ones? Damned lucky.", the man said from his perch on a table. "I know, Shane. She was very lucky.", she finished examining Harriet and peeled the gloves off. "Everything seems fine but we need to take you four down to the hospital just in case. Let one of the doctors look you over." "Thank you.", Harriet whispered, her eyes closed. "No problem, sugar. You just wait there, we'll get the stretcher.", the man winked. He jumped off the table and followed Rose out. "Well.", Admiral Chegwidden smiled. "May be now we can go home. And it's only...", he paused to look at his watch, "It's already tomorrow. 1:25." "There goes my long weekend.", Mac muttered. "Here we go.", Shane and Rose had returned with the stretcher. They expertly moved Harriet onto it. "If you three would follow us.", they headed out the door. "After you, madam doctor!", Harm whispered, bowing to Mac. "Shut up!", she hissed as she started out the door. Harm, Bud and A.J. followed. "Oh my.", Rose said. "We may need you three to come along. We have no way to carry the babies." "That's no problem.", Mac put in. "They can carry and I can drive." Rose smiled gratefully. "That's perfect. We'll wait for you and you can follow. I'll ride in back with you, ma'am.", the last comment directed at Harriet. "I'll make sure Shane doesn't kill you with his driving." "I heard that!", came the indignant reply. Harriet giggled tiredly. They all piled in the cars and drove quickly to Bethesda Naval Hospital. They quickly got Harriet settled into a room and took the babies to the neonatal unit. Harriet was resting when Mac knocked on her door. "Can I come in," Mac asked. "Of course." Harriet smiled as her friend came in. "I will never be able to repay you for what you did for me tonight." "Harriet, no thanks are necessary. Your my friend, you needed me and I was more than happy to do it." Mac leaned over and gave Harriet a warm hug. Just then the door opened, and Bud and Harm walked in. Bud went to Harriet’s bed, sat down on the edge of his wife’s bed and gently pressed his lips to her forehead. "I love you," he whispered. She smiled back up at him and looked at her friends. "Commander, Major," she started, "We would like for you two to be the godparents. It would be such an honor if you would say yes." They looked at Mac and Harm with large, hopeful eyes. Mac looked at Harm and said, "I'd be honored." He smiled at her and then looked at the anxious new parents. "It would be a pleasure. Harriet was about to thank them when two nurses walked in. They had the babies in their arms. Harriet gasped. This would be the first time she held her children. "Sir, Ma'am. will you hold the other two, I want to get this on film." Mac and Harm nodded and took Adam and Cameron in their arms. Bud pulled out a disposable camera and snapped a picture of Harriet and their other son. These were moments he wanted to treasure always. There was a familiar voice at the door, "How's our new family?” Shane asked, Rose following him in. "We didn't get to say congratulations.", she said to Harriet and Bud. "And we didn't get to say thank you.", Harriet returned. Rose smiled. "It's all in the job." "Won't you two join us for a little while?", Harriet asked. "You haven't met my family. This is Adam. This is Cameron and this is...oh my one of my children is nameless." "What about Ethan?", Shane asked. "That's a good name.", Harm said. "Ethan Riley.", Rose put in. "Ethan Riley, it is. And this is Ethan.", Harriet said. Her pride and joy filled the room. "Whose names are those anyway?", Bud asked, his gaze never leaving Adam. "Ethan's my middle name and --" Shane started. "And Riley's my last name.", Rose finished. "A fitting tribute.", the Admiral said from the doorway. "I think so.", Harm put in. "What about me?", Mac teased. "Next time, ma'am. Next time.", Bud said. Harriet glared at him. He jumped visible. "Next time.", she repeated, reaching for his hand; he grinned. "Let's concentrate on the family we have now," Bud said, "before we start again." The crowded room was filled with everything life should be: Love, happiness, and laughter. After a little while, Mac and Harm left. They still had to be at work in the morning. The admiral had reminded them of that when he left about half an hour ago. Harm picked up Mac's coat and helped her pull it on. She smiled up at him and they started to leave. He placed his hand on the small of her back and escorted her out of the room. They had driven Harm's car over and he was going to take her home. En route to Mac's apartment, Harm looked over at her in awe. She was so beautiful, so smart, and all around amazing. She looked over and caught him staring at her. "What?" she asked, smiling. "Oh, nothing. I'm just thinking about how incredible you are. What you did tonight was amazing." "You would of done the same thing." Harm stopped the car in the lot of her building. He turned in his seat and gazed at her. "You're going to make a wonderful mother some day." Harm leaned in and let his lips gently brush hers. Then, he pulled back. He wanted to make sure this was what she wanted too. As he started to lean forward again, their lips were almost touching when a shrill sneeze escaped from Mac. Harm groaned. "And our adventure in the snow seemed like such a great idea at the time." Mac laughed and sneezed again. "Come on," he said. He opened the door and went around to open hers. "What are you doing? This is my apartment." Harm grinned. "I know. But, in case you forgot, you made me promise to take care of you if you got sick. You're sick and I'm going to take care of you. I'll always take care of you." Mac smiled at his words and kissed him on his cheek. "Always." ~Finis~ "So, what'd ya think? Huh huh huh? I can't hear you!! Man drat, I guess you'll just have send Heather and me a message!! (HLNabers@charlotte.uncc.edu and AbiRani@aol.com) FEEDBACK IS WONDERFUL!! Don't flame us too bad, this is my first time at least..." "Hold up Abi! We forgot to say that even though we would like to, we don't own Harm (that sucks!), or Mac, Bud, Harriet, or AJ. CBS and Donald Bellasario have that pleasure! Thanks for reading!" "Oops! I forgot! Sorry! Thanks! I knew I forgot something... Bye!!"
