Thanks and enjoy! 0330 Zulu (2230 EST) Portsmouth Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia “What have we got?” Commander Rachel McKenna called out from the nurse’s station, as two paramedics rushed into the Emergency Room with a stretcher. “Gun shot wound to the chest. B.P is 90 over 40, pulse 145. Tags say patient is O neg,” one medic answered. “Patient was unconscious when we arrived at the scene,” the second medic added. “Lt. Michaels, get the O.R prepped for immediate surgery.” Commander McKenna ordered and the Lt. ran to the O.R. Commander McKenna, the doctor on duty, and her nurse, Lieutenant Courtney Parry ran to meet the stretcher. “What’s his name?” Parry asked. “Jake?” Commander McKenna questioned in shock as she recognized the patient. “You know him Ma’am?” Lt. Parry asked. “This is Lieutenant Commander Jake Hollis. He his stationed at Norfolk,” she answered without thinking. “Ah I met him at a party last year,” she added, hoping no one caught the fear and awkwardness in her voice. “Is there an exit wound?” Parry asked the paramedics as Commander McKenna stared down at the man before her. “No exit wound Ma’am,” the medic replied. “Commander? Ma’am?” Ensign Christopher Raymond tried to get the Commander’s attention. “Sorry,” she apologized as she snapped out of it. “Let’s get him to surgery immediately. We have to get that bullet out of him,” McKenna ordered. The medical staff took the stretcher from the paramedics and rushed it into the O.R. The two paramedics turned to head back to their ambulance. As they reached the doors of the emergency room, two police officers approached them. “Excuse me, did you just transport a gun shot victim from Monticello Ave in Norfolk?” the first officer ask the medics. “Yes we did, and you are?” the medic responded. “Sorry, I am Detective James Grissom and this is my partner, Detective Mike Waters. We are with the Norfolk Homicide division. What can you tell us about the victim? He was military right?” he started. “Yes sir. A Lieutenant Commander Jake Hollis from the Norfolk Naval Base,” the medic answered. “You got that all from his tags?” detective Waters questioned. “No sir. The doctor, Commander McKenna recognized him sir,” the second medic replied. “What is the patient’s condition?” Grissom asked. “He was unconscious upon arrival at the scene. Single gun shot wound to the chest, no exit wound. He is in surgery as we speak,” the medic replied. “Thank you. My partner will need your names in case we need to talk with you again,” Grissom told them. He nodded goodbye and headed to the nurse’s station. Detective Waters took the paramedics names and allowed them to leave. After parting from the medics, Waters joined Grissom at the desk. “We can’t get any more information until Dr. McKenna is out of surgery,” Grissom told his partner. “You mean Commander McKenna sir?” Waters corrected. “Yes. Commander McKenna. We had better get back to the crime scene before they send in JAG to step on our toes.” Grissom told him as he began heading for the exit. “Sir?” Waters replied in confusion. “Never worked with JAG Mike?” Grissom asked. “No sir. What’s the problem?” Waters returned. “Well I have. And if they send who I think they are going to send, we are in for a long week,” he replied as they exited the hospital. 1830 Zulu (1330 EST) JAG Headquarters Falls Church, Virginia “Loss of pay for 30 days and no confinement,” Harm offered. “Harm he beat a man unconscious. Three months confinement, and a dishonorable discharge,” Mac countered. “He was protecting a child from being abused by the boy’s father. One month confinement and he stays in the corp.” Harm returned. “And he gets anger management counseling,” Mac added. “Done,” Harm agreed with a smile. “You know he is really getting off easy,” Mac started as they headed for the coffee maker. “So he made an error in judgment, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get another chance,” Harm told her. “Well you would know about that better than anyone Harm,” she returned with a sly smile. “And what are you getting at Colonel?” he returned trying to sound innocent. “Do I have to remind you of that time you shot off a gun in the courtroom?” she stated. “Ok maybe I misjudged that one, but I still won the case Mac,” Harm replied with his trademark ‘flyboy’ smile. “That smile is only going to get you so far Harm,” she replied teasingly. “Well I still have my charm and good looks,” Harm replied slyly. “At ease flyboy, that ego is going to get the best of you one day,” Mac replied with a strong smile. “Sorry to interrupt. The Admiral needs to see you both in his office immediately,” Tiner informed them. Harm and Mac placed their coffee cups on the table and headed for the Admiral’s office Harm knocked on the door. “Enter!” the Admiral called out. Harm and Mac entered the room and snapped to attention. “Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie reporting as ordered sir,” Rabb announced. “At ease,” the Admiral ordered. “Lieutenant Commander Jake Hollis was shot in an alley after returning from a performance of the Virginia Symphony last night. He is alive but in critical condition,” he explained. “Your orders are to report to Norfolk and assist in the investigation. You will be working with a Detective Grissom from Norfolk Homicide,” Admiral Chegwidden ordered. “James Grissom?” Harm asked in surprise. “You know him Harm?” Mac asked. “Commander Rabb worked with Grissom on an assault case back in ’96,” the Admiral interjected. “Yes sir,” Rabb agreed. “I talked with Grissom this morning. I got the impression that he really doesn’t like you Commander,” the Admiral added. “The feeling is mutual sir,” Harm replied. “Well I am sure you can put your feelings aside on this one Commander.” “Yes sir,” Harm replied. “Dismissed,” Chegwidden ordered. The Commander and the Colonel snapped to attention. “Aye, sir.” Harm and Mac exited the Admiral’s office and headed back to Harm’s office. Mac could see the pain in Harm’s eyes as he walked without a word. “So what happened with Grissom in ’96?” Mac inquired. Harm took a deep breath before answering. “I was assigned to defend an Ensign McCauley, who was charged with assaulting and raping a young woman in Norfolk. Grissom was the lead investigator on the case. My client maintained his innocence throughout the investigation, if you can call it that. Grissom was not very forth coming when it came to sharing information, so I began investigating on my own. Without too much trouble, I managed to find a witness that exonerated my client and identified the real attacker,” he began. “So what, he didn’t like you stepping on his toes?” Mac questioned. “He didn’t like the fact that my witness named his partner, Lt. Holtz, as the true attacker.” “Oh. So what happened?” Mac asked. “When we went to apprehend his partner, Holtz ate his gun,” Harm finished as he began nervously shuffling papers on his desk. “It wasn’t your fault Harm,” she told him as she placed her hand on his to calm him. Harm took Mac’s hand into his and looked into her eyes as he leaned in closer to her. They stood for several seconds, just inches apart her eyes never wavering from his. Harm wanted to kiss her but he knew he couldn’t, not now, not like this. Harm backed away from her and cleared his throat, breaking the tension between them. Mac stood where he had left her, disappointed and confused about what had just happened. “Well I am going to get my stuff,” Mac announced breaking the awkward silence between them. “What do you say to lunch before we head out to Norfolk?” quickly changing the subject. “Sure,” Harm answered quickly. “Give me five minutes,” she replied as she left his office. As soon as Mac had left his office, Harm sat down at his desk and placed his face in his hands. “Stupid,” he whispered to himself. Unbeknownst to Harm, Mac had turned back toward him, and witnessed him punishing himself. She turned and headed back to her office with sadness in her eyes. 2110 Zulu (1610 EST) Chrysler Hall Norfolk, Virginia As the car pulled up to Chrysler Hall, Harm easily able to spot the crime scene. Several police cars and yellow tape, blocked off an alley off of Monticello Ave. Several police officers were busy completing their analysis of the crime scene. Harm found a space and parked the car. Mac and Harm exited the vehicle and took a quick look around. “There he is,” Harm said as he nodded toward the police officer heading in their direction. “Grissom?” she asked. “Yeah,” he confirmed. “Be a good boy,” she said with a smile. “Aren’t I always?” he replied. She just gave him a sly look. “Commander Rabb, good to see you again,” the officer greeted him with a handshake. “Detective Grissom, moving up in the world I see,” Harm responded politely but coldly. Grissom noticed the coldness of Harm’s tone. “And who’s your friend?” Grissom asked as he took a step closer to Mac. “This is Marine Colonel Sarah Mackenzie, my partner,” Harm stated sternly as he protectively, stepped closer to Mac. “Nice to meet you Colonel,” Grissom greeted with a handshake and a smile. Harm’s eyes never leaving Grissom’s. “Nice to meet you too, detective,” she replied. “Well Harm, she’s even prettier than your last partner,” Grissom told him as he looked Mac over, angering Harm. “So what can you tell us about the shooting Grissom?” Harm interjected quickly, stepping closer to Mac. Harm’s actions and tone did not go unnoticed to Mac but she held back from saying anything about it. “Well not much yet. The victim was on his way home after attending the symphony when he was shot in the chest. There was no exit wound, and his wallet and watch were not missing so it doesn’t look like a robbery,” he began. “Any witnesses?” Mac asked him. “No but a couple did hear the shot and saw a man running from the scene but they didn’t get a good look at him,” he answered. “We will need the couple’s names and address,” Harm told him. “Here you are,” he replied as he handed him a page from his notebook. “The names of the paramedics that transported the vic are in there too in case you wanted them.” “Thank you that will be helpful,” Harm replied. “Did he have a companion for the symphony?” Harm questioned. “No. We checked with the box office, and he had a single ticket,” Grissom responded. “The Lt. Commander was taken to Portsmouth Naval Hospital,” Grissom added. “Did you recover the bullet?” Mac asked. “Yes it was recovered in surgery. It’s already on its way to ballistics,” he answered. “If there isn’t anything else, we’re going to head to the hospital now. If you find out something new, please give me a call,” Harm told him as he handed him his business card. “Will do,” Grissom replied as he took the card. “It was nice meeting you Colonel,” Grissom parted. “Nice meeting you too detective,” Mac replied as they left him. Mac and Harm headed back to the car in silence. Harm didn’t even so much as look at Mac as they walked. Mac could see his face from the corner of her eye. His look was unmistakable. She easily recognized the inner fight in his eyes. The car ride began in silence. Mac could tell that Harm hadn’t told her the whole story back at headquarters. She remembered how protective of her, but never like that. His story didn’t explain his actions, nor did it explain the pain in his eyes. “Ok Harm, spill it,” she demanded. “Spill what?” he answered. “Come on Harm, I know you. You didn’t tell me everything that happened between you and Grissom,” Mac told him. “What makes you say that?” he replied trying to sound innocent. “I have never seen you that protective of me Harm,” she confronted him. “Besides I haven’t seen this much pain in your eyes, since you found out your father died in Russia,” she told him. “Please Harm tell me what’s going on?” Harm held back a moment taking a deep breath before answering her question. “Meg,” he replied. “Your old partner?” she asked. “Yes,” he confirmed. “It happened that night Grissom and I went to apprehend his partner Lt. Holtz. We got to Holtz’s home and he seemed really collected and ready to take responsibility for his actions. He told us he needed to use the head before we left. A minute later we heard a gun shot. We found Holtz on the floor of the bathroom. Afterward Grissom came at me and blamed me for his partner’s death. I decided to leave and give him a chance to cool off. I was a little taken back by what had happened so I decided to walk back to the hotel. When I returned to the hotel, I heard yelling coming from Meg’s room. I called out to her but she didn’t answer me. I broke in the door and found her pinned to the floor by Grissom. Her shirt was ripped and she was fighting him. He told me ‘you took my partner so now I’m going to take yours’. Meg kneed him and I threw him off of her and punched him out. Meg swore she wasn’t hurt and told me to let it go. After a long talk with her and Grissom, we decided to let it go as trauma after his partner’s suicide. Grissom agreed to get counseling. Meg said she wasn’t hurt and to drop it, but I never forgave Grissom for that night,” Harm explained tears pooling in his eyes. They both sat in silence for several moments. Mac wasn’t sure what she could say to Harm about what he had just told her. “They you,” she stated simply. “For what?” Harm replied. “For trusting me enough to share that secret with me,” she told him. “I have always trusted you Mac,” Harm replied in a very serious tone. “I know you trust your partners Harm,” she replied. “You’re more than just a partner to me Mac,” he told her as he placed his hand over hers. “You know that right?” he said softly. “I…you’re going to miss the entrance Harm!” she exclaimed as she saw the hospital entrance coming up ahead. He returned his hand to the wheel and turned just in time to make the entrance. “Sorry Harm,” she apologized. They stopped for the guard at the front gate. “Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie to see Lt. Commander Hollis in ICU,” Rabb stated as they flashed their IDs. “Thank you. Go ahead sir,” the guard told him. They pulled away from the gate into the parking lot. 2130 Zulu (1630 EST) Portsmouth Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia Mac and Harm entered the hospital lobby. Harm went to the water fountain to get a drink while Mac went to the desk to get Lt. Commander’s room number. “He’s in 235,” Mac relayed as Harm rejoined her. They headed to the elevator in silence, their minds replaying the conversation from the car. Bad timing as always. Is he finally ready to tell me how he feels or will he back out again? I know he trusts me and I know he loves me but will he ever say it? Mac thought as they made their way to the second floor. Meanwhile Harm was desperately trying to rebury the painful thoughts he had just dug up. Harm allowed Mac to exit the elevator first and then they made their way to the nurse’s station. “Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie to see Lt. Commander Hollis,” Harm told the nurse at the desk. “I’m sorry sir, Commander Hollis slipped into a coma two hours after he came out of surgery,” the Ensign told them. “Was there a complication ensign?” Mac asked in concern. “Yes, apparently he had a bad reaction to the pain medication Ma’am,” she replied. “May we speak to the Lt. Commander’s doctor?” Harm asked the Ensign. “Certainly sir, that is Commander Rachel McKenna, I believe she is in the Lt. Commander’s room right now. It is 235, at the end of the hall,” she directly them. “Thank you Ensign,” Mac replied as they headed for the room in question. As Mac and Harm approached the room, they heard a voice from inside. They saw the doctor sitting next to the bed speaking in a soft voice to the comatose patient. “Excuse me, are you Commander McKenna?” Harm interrupted. “Oh, I didn’t hear you come in,” she spoke as quickly stood up. “Yes I’m Commander McKenna. What can I do for you?” she replied. “I’m Commander Harmon Rabb and this is my partner Colonel Sarah Mackenzie. We’re with the JAG corp. We are investigating Lt. Commander Hollis’s shooting,” Harm explained. “Commander, Colonel,” she nodded. “Do you know Hollis Ma’am?” Mac asked her. “Oh no. I mean, I met him, at a party once, but I didn’t really know him,” she said nervously. “I was just talking to him because it helps in recovering from a coma.” “I see,” Mac replied. “What’s his prognosis Ma’am,” Harm asked. “Well he made it through the surgery okay. The bullet missed all major organs. Assuming he comes out of the coma, he should make a full recovery,” the Commander told them. “Can you tell us anything about the bullet?” Mac inquired. “Not really. I can tell you that it is standard issue caliber for Navy personnel,” she replied. “If there is nothing else, I need to attend to my other patients,” Commander McKenna requested quickly. “Of course, you will let us know if he wakes up?” Harm asked. “Of course sir, Ma’am,” she nodded again as she exited the room. “So what do you think Mac?” Harm asked. “About Hollis or Commander McKenna?” she replied. “What do you mean?” he replied. “Well I got the feeling that the Commander wasn’t just talking to Hollis as a doctor. I am thinking maybe she knew him a little better than an acquaintance,” she explained suspiciously. “What are you thinking, friend or maybe even lover?” he asked. “I wouldn’t rule it out,” she replied. “Let’s head to the base and find out some more about Hollis and McKenna. See if there is a connection,” Harm suggested as they left the room. 2215 Zulu (1715 EST) Norfolk Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia “Admiral Mayfield? Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie from JAG are here to see you sir,” the Gunny informed him over the intercom. “Send them in,” he replied. Mac and Harm entered the room and snapped to attention before the Admiral. “Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie reporting sir,” Harm announced. “At ease. I assume you are here about Lt. Commander Hollis?” the Admiral inquired. “Yes sir. We would like to ask you few questions,” Harm answered. “Whatever I can do to help,” the Admiral replied. “How well did you know the Lt. Commander, sir?” Mac started. “He has served under me for three years now. He is a fine officer. Highly decorated,” the Admiral replied. “Did he have any enemies, sir?” Mac asked. “Not that I know of. He is very well liked around here.” “Do you know if he was seeing anyone?” Harm returned. “Not as far as I know, but then again I may not be the best one to answer that. You might try asking Lieutenant Jason Briggs, they are pretty close friends,” he replied. “Thank you sir,” Harm replied. “Commander, do you have any leads yet?” the Admiral inquired. “No sir, not yet. We will let you know when we do sir,” he replied. “Is there anything else Commander?” “Not at this time sir,” he replied. “Very well. Dismissed,” the Admiral ordered. Mac and Harm snapped to attention. “Aye aye sir,” they both executed perfect about- faces and exited the room. Mac waited until they were outside before she said what was on her mind. “You forgot to mention that the bullet was from this base Harm,” she told him in a strong military tone. “Right now we don’t know that for sure Mac. Besides if it is, than everyone on this base is a potential suspect. I would rather not have the Admiral knowing that until he needs to,” he replied. “Understood,” she replied. 0045 Zulu (1945 EST) Base Residence of Lt. Briggs Norfolk Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia Mac and Harm approached the front door of the residence and Harm knocked on the door. “Yes?” the man answered as he opened the door. “Are you Lieutenant Jason Briggs?” Mac asked the man. “Yes I am,” he replied. “I am Commander Rabb, this is Colonel Mackenzie. We would like to ask you a few questions regarding Lt. Commander Hollis,” Harm explained. “Are you JAG?” he questioned. “Yes we are. May we come in for a minute?” Harm answered. “Absolutely sir, Ma’am,” he told them as he backed up to allow them entrance. “Thank you,” Mac replied as they entered. “So how can I help?” Briggs began. “Admiral Mayfield told us that you are a close friend of the Lt. Commander,” Harm started. “Yes sir,” he replied. “Did you see him at all yesterday?” Mac questioned. “Yes Ma’am, last night before he left for the Symphony,” Briggs replied. “How did he seem to you?” Harm interjected. “Fine sir,” he replied. “Did he attend the concert alone or did he have company?” Mac asked. “He usually went alone Ma’am.” “Was the Commander seeing anyone?” she returned. “Yes Ma’am. I never met the woman and Jake didn’t talk about her much,” he replied. “Why not?” Harm asked. “I think she is married sir, but he would never admit that to me,” he replied. “Did you ever get a name Lieutenant?” Mac asked. “Claire. I never got a last name,” Briggs replied. “Can you tell us anything else about his girlfriend Lieutenant?” Harm questioned. “Jake let it slip once that she was a doctor, but he didn’t say where,” Briggs added. “Can you think of anyone on the base that might want to hurt Hollis?” Harm continued. “No sir. Everyone got along really well with Jake, ah Lt. Commander Hollis,” he replied. “Well thank you Lieutenant. You have been very helpful,” Mac finished. “We may need to speak with you again if anything else comes up,” Harm told him as they all stood and headed for the door. “Anything I can do to help,” Briggs replied as he opened the door. “Have a good evening Sir, Ma’am.” “Thank you Lieutenant Briggs,” Mac replied as they left. After Briggs closed the door, Mac and Harm began hypothesizing. “Commander McKenna is the girlfriend?” Harm speculated. “Claire may be a nickname or middle name,” Mac offered as Harm pulled out his cell phone and dialed. “Bud, I need a favor. I need you to pull up any information on a Commander Rachel McKenna. See if you can find any reports of domestic disturbances, abuse allegations, and so forth. Also, I need you find out her middle name, oh and her maiden name.” Harm talked into the phone. “Thank you Bud,” Harm replied and hung up the phone. “Bud will let me know as soon as he finds anything,” Harm replied and hung up the phone. “Bud will let me know as soon as he finds anything,” Harm informed her. “Great until then, what do you say to dinner?” Mac returned. “Sure. I know this great little Italian place,” Harm replied as they got into the car. 0050 Zulu (1950 EST) Le Promenade Restaurant Norfolk, Virginia “How’s your chicken parm?” Harm asked his partner sitting across the table from him. “Not bad,” Mac answered after she finished her bite. “Not bad? It’s got to be better than those beltway burgers you like so much,” Harm teased. “Well close rival anyway,” she replied with a smile. “How’s your ravioli?” she returned. “Excellent. I love this place. I found it six years ago and I like to get back whenever I’m in the area,” he replied as he took another bite. “Did you come here with Meg?” she asked curiously. “Yes I did, she had the chicken too. She loved it,” he replied with his trademark smile. Mac returned the smile but quickly changed to a serious expression. “Harm about what you said in the car…” Mac started but was interrupted by the ringing of Harm’s cell phone. “Hello?” Harm answered. “Hey Bud, tell me you have something,” he listened while Bud gave him the information. “Thanks Bud, have a good night,” he finished and hung up the phone. “Commander McKenna’s middle name is Claire,” Harm started explaining to Mac. “Her husband is an Air Force Colonel out of Langley. Three domestic disturbance calls have been reported to the McKenna residence in the past two years,” he finished. “So the husband discovered the affair and shot Commander Hollis?” Mac hypothesized. “But the bullet was Navy issue not Air Force,” Harm interjected. “He used his wife’s gun,” Mac added. “It fits,” Harm concluded. “If Colonel McKenna did shoot Hollis over an affair with his wife, Rachel may be in danger,” Mac pointed out worriedly. “We need to get to their residence,” Harm returned as he pulled out some money from his wallet and left it on the table for the meal. “Let’s go.” “Harm you have to call Grissom and let him know what’s going on,” Mac reminded him. Harm cringed at the thought but did what she asked. “Norfolk Virginia. Norfolk Homicide Division. (Pause) Thank you,” he hung up the phone and dialed the new number. “Yes may I speak with Detective Grissom? (pause) Can I leave a message for him? (pause) Tell him Commander Rabb called. We have a lead. Tell him to meet us at the McKenna residence, 5-5-5 Lakewood Drive,” Rabb left the message and hung up the phone. “He’ll meet us there, let’s go,” Harm told her as they quickly exited the restaurant. 0220 Zulu (2120 EST) McKenna Residence 555 Lakewood Drive Norfolk, Virginia Mac and Harm exited the vehicle and began walking up the front path. Suddenly a lamp landed on the front lawn, smashing the front window. Harm and Mac immediately drew their side-arms. They quickly walked up to the front door, guns pointed on angle at the ground. They heard yelling and the sound of breaking glass emerging from the house. Rabb quietly opened the door. They walked in just in time to see the Colonel throw his wife onto the coffee table, smashing it on impact. “Freeze!” Harm yelled pointing the gun at the Colonel. The man backed away from his wife and raised his hands in the air. Harm lowered his weapon and began walking toward the Colonel to apprehend him. Meanwhile, Mac placed her weapon in the waist band of her shirt and ran to Rachel’s side. Suddenly a gunshot pierced the air. Mac’s eyes shot up to Colonel McKenna. The Colonel was holding a gun. Mac’s heart fell out of her chest as her eyes came upon her partner, and best friend, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound in his left shoulder. “Harm!” she yelled as she reached for her weapon. “Don’t do it Colonel,” McKenna ordered as he grabbed his wife and pointed the gun her head. “Take it out slowly and toss it to me or I’ll kill her,” he ordered. Hesitantly, Mac did as he asked. “Good. Now slowly get up and walk over to your partner.” Mac did as she was told and slowly moved to Harm’s side. Harm was still breathing but was unconscious and losing a lot of blood. “He needs medical attention, now!” Mac yelled at the Colonel. “Well, you’re in luck. My slut of a wife here happens to be a doctor,” he told Mac as he walked toward her still holding on to his wife. “Jason stop. Please they have nothing to do with this. Let them go,” Rachel pleaded with her husband. “Stop? I’m just getting started,” he replied. “Please Jason, we can work this out,” she cried out. “Shut up bitch! You had your chance but no, you went and jumped the first available man you could find. Well he will never touch my property again!” he yelled as he slapped her across the face. Before Mac could get the chance to move, the Colonel turned his attention back to the marine standing in front of him. “Now pick up your partner and back up slowly towards the door behind you,” he ordered. Mac carefully picked up Harm off the floor, and backed up towards the door as ordered. “Good. Now, open the door and head down the stairs,” Mac did as she was told and carefully carried Harm down the stairs into the basement. “Someone must have heard the gunshot. You should surrender while you can!” Mac yelled to the Colonel. “No worries Colonel, none of my neighbors will be home for hours. That gives me plenty of time,” he replied. “Plenty of time for what?” she inquired as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “To take care of business,” he replied as he threw his wife down the stairs and slammed the door shut. Mac heard the door lock as Commander McKenna landed on the basement floor. Mac carefully laid Harm on the floor and then ran to Rachel’s side to check her condition. The fall knocked her unconscious, but she was still alive. Mac quickly returned her attentions to her fallen partner. She sat behind him and placed his head on her lap. She grabbed a towel from off of the washing machine and placed it over Harm’s wound and began applying pressure. “Come on Harm don’t give up on me,” she said as the tears flowed from her eyes. “Mac?” Harm whispered as began to awaken. “Harm,” she replied in surprise. “What happened?” “Colonel McKenna shot you and he is holding us captive in the basement. He threw his wife down the stairs. She is ok but unconscious,” she explained quickly. “We have to get out of here,” Harm told her as he tried to get up. “No lay still,” she told him as she returned his head to her lap. “Mac, I’m so sorry,” Harm whispered as he intertwined his free hand with hers. “No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have turned my back on you or the Colonel,” Mac replied as more tears fell on her cheek. “It wasn’t your fault. I didn’t see the gun until it was too late,” he replied as raised their hands to her cheek. “Don’t worry about it now, just stay with me. We’ll get out of this somehow,” she assured him as she turned her head to kiss his palm. “Mac, I, I want to tell you something,” he started. “Anything Harm,” she replied as she looked into his eyes. “I’m sorry. I tried to tell you many times but I couldn’t find…” Harm’s eyes began to fall backward and he was losing consciousness. “Stay with me Harm, don’t you dare leave me,” she told him as she shook him gently, tears building in her eyes once again. “I need you to know,” he started again. “What Harm? What are you trying to tell me?” she questioned, the tears flowing down her cheek. Harm got his focus back and brought himself to a seated position next to Mac. The pain was harsh but he did his best to ignore it. Once in a comfortable position, he re-linked his fingers with hers and looked deeply into her eyes. Harm took a deep breath and for the first time in almost seven years, he spoke to her from his heart. “I…I love you Sarah,” he whispered as he tightened his grip on her hand. Mac couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Harm finally did it. He finally told her what she had been waiting to hear. Her heart swelled up as the tears continued to run down her face. Harm moved his hand to her face to wipe away the tears. “I love you too Harm, I always have,” she finally replied as she brought her hand up to cup his cheek. Harm leaned in to kiss her but was halted by a sudden jolt of pain. He moaned as he fell back against the wall. “I’m sorry Mac,” he apologized. “It’s ok. I’m not going anywhere,” she replied softly. “Come here,” he whispered as he reached out his hand toward her. She knelt down beside him and joined her hand with his once more. “I’m sorry I never told you before Mac. I have loved you for a very long time. I’m so sorry,” Harm whispered as tears began flowing from his eyes. “It’s ok Harm, I’ve always known, and don’t you dare talk like you’re giving up. I’m not letting you go,” she whispered as she leaned closer to kiss him for the first time after confessing their love to one another. Their lips finally met, and in that moment, they felt like the rest of the world had disappeared around them. They had kissed before, but not like this. They were not kissing as friends, but as two people very much in love with one another. Harm lost all thought of their situation and his pain. All he could think about was this perfect woman, his partner, his best friend, his true love. Everything they’ve shared, everything they will share. It was all compacted into this one perfect kiss. He pulled her closer as he deepened the kiss, her lips parting to allow him entrance. His kiss was just as she had envisioned it. It was love, passion, power, need, and desire all rolled into one. Mac pulled away slowly and returned her eyes to his gaze. Neither could conger a word in this moment, both simply smiled. For so long she had waited for this moment. Harm was her best friend and soul-mate. She knew that nothing could ever make her happier than being in his arms. Mac and Harm’s happiness was cut short when the basement door opened and light filled the room. “Lie back and rest,” Mac told Harm quietly. “But Mac?” Harm questioned. “Trust me flyboy,” she replied with a smile. Mac leaned over Harm and whispered into his ear. “I love you.” “Harm! No!” she yelled as the Colonel reached the bottom of the stairs. “He’s dead. You killed him you son of a bitch!” she yelled as the tears returned to her eyes. “What? Impossible, I didn’t get him that bad,” he said in panic. The Colonel walked over to Harm and reached down to check his pulse. Just as the Colonel’s hand reached his throat, Harm kneed him in the stomach. Before McKenna had a chance to recover, Mac threw him against the wall, just to the other side of Harm. Mac kicked him in the stomach and then threw a punch which landed squarely in his face. McKenna fell to the floor unconscious. “Come on Harm, let’s get you out of here,” Mac told him as she helped him up. During the commotion, neither Harm nor Mac noticed Commander McKenna regained consciousness. “Are you two alright?” Commander McKenna asked as she slowly stood up. “Yeah, how are you?” Mac replied. “I have a nasty headache but I’ll live,” she replied. “We have to get the Commander to the hospital,” she told them as she looked at the wound. “No argument here,” Harm agreed. “Is Jason,” McKenna questioned. “He’s unconscious,” Mac informed her. “I am so sorry for all of this,” Rachel apologized. “Come on let’s get out of here,” Mac replied. As Rachel, Mac, and Harm exited the front door, they saw Grissom’s car pull up and he and his partner jump out quickly. “I just got you message. What happened?” Grissom asked noticing Harm’s condition. “Colonel Jason McKenna just tried to kill us. He shot Hollis and Harm,” Mac answered him as she continued to help Harm down the sidewalk. Suddenly Colonel McKenna appeared at the doorway with a gun. Unknown to Harm and the others, the gun was pointed straight at him. “You think you can just take her away from me again Commander!” he yelled as he prepared to shoot. “Down!” Grissom yelled as he pulled out his weapon and shot McKenna. McKenna fell to the ground instantly. Grissom’s partner ran to check on McKenna. “He’s dead sir,” Waters yelled. “Well I guess I owe you one Grissom,” Harm spoke humbly. “Why don’t we call it even Commander,” he replied as he held out his hand. Harm smiled and shook Grissom’s hand. 1330 Zulu (0830 EST) Portsmouth Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia “How ya feelin’ flyboy?” Mac greeted Harm as he emerged from the emergency room with his arm in a sling. “Well as long as I can go a while without being shot, I should be fine,” he answered with his trademark smile. Mac’s mind wandered briefly to the events of the previous evening. Did Harm really confess his love to her or was it just an effect of the trauma? He was pretty out of it for a while. “Look about what you said last night, what we said last night,” she started nervously. “I know it was probably just the rush of the event, you were pretty out of it and for a minute I thought I was going to lose you, and if you didn’t really mean what you said I would completely understand, and…” Mac rambled. Harm realized what she was saying and slowly walked toward her until his body was only inches from hers. “Mac,” he tried to stop her rambling. She stopped as her eyes met with his. She could see the love in his eyes. Harm leaned over and whispered in her ear. “I meant every word Sarah.” He brought his eyes to meet with hers again. The passion and love between them was quite evident. Harm leaned in to kiss her, but stopped when he heard someone walking toward them. A nurse passed them without even glancing in their direction. “We should go check on Lt. Commander Hollis and Commander McKenna,” Mac suggested and Harm greeted. Mac and Harm entered Commander Hollis’ room to a surprising sight. The Lt. Commander was awake. “Commander, Colonel, nice you see you again,” Rachel greeted from Hollis’ bedside. “How’s the shoulder Commander?” “I’ll live,” he replied with a smile. “How are you Commander Hollis?” Mac inquired. “I’ll be okay. My doctor here is the greatest,” he replied as he linked his hand with Rachel’s. “I should be able to go home in a few days.” “That’s great news,” Mac replied with a smile. “Commander? Colonel? Rachel tells me that if it wasn’t for your help, she’d probably be dead right now. Thank you so much,” Commander Hollis thanked them. “Glad we could help,” Harm replied. “Even though I was shot, I am glad that we got the bad guy and that you both are alive.” “Well I think we will let you two have some time together. I hope everything works out for you two,” Mac bid them farewell as she started toward the exit. “Thank you Colonel. I wish the same for you as well. Take care of each other,” Rachel returned with a smile. “We will,” Harm replied as they left the room. “We are going to have a lot of paper work when we get back to the office. What do you say to dinner at my place? 1900 hours?” Harm suggested. “Sounds great,” Mac replied. “You’re not cooking are you?” she teased. “Hey keep that up missy,” he returned playfully. “Oh yeah, what are you gonna do about it flyboy,” Mac countered. Harm looked around and noticed they were alone in the hallway. Harm grabbed Mac’s arm and pulled her around the corner into an empty room. “This,” he told her as he gently pushed her up against the wall and crushed her lips with his. His embrace was so strong and powerful. She felt as if her knees would give out at any moment. The fire between them was growing stronger as his tongue slipped out and began caressing her lips, seeking entrance. Her lips parted, allowing him access. He gently caressed and explored her mouth as his right hand slid up her back, pulling her closer to him. She wanted him so much. His kiss was even better than the first had been. He had all his strength back and his desire for her was quite evident to her. Suddenly their lips parted and Mac pulled away from Harm slightly. “Harm we can’t, not here. We could be facing a court martial if anyone sees us,” she told him. “You’re right, we should go,” Harm agreed and dropped his hold on her, but not before giving her one last searing kiss. 1800 Zulu (1300 EST) JAG Headquarters Falls Church, Virginia “Sir, Ma’am, good to have you back,” Bud greeted. “Are you okay sir?” Bud questioned, noticing his arm. “I’ll be fine Bud. Mac had to keep me in line while we were in Norfolk,” Harm said with a glare at his partner. “Ma’am? Sir?” Bud questioned in confusion. “It was a joke Bud,” Harm replied with a chuckle. “Harm was shot when we tried to stop our suspect from beating up his wife,” Mac explained. “Wow, what happened?” Bud questioned. “I’ll tell you all about it, if you’ll help me with some paperwork,” Harm asked his eager assistant. “I can do that sir,” Bud replied and they began heading toward Harm’s office. Harm stopped and took a step toward Mac. “Tonight,” he whispered to his partner and true love. “I’ll be there flyboy,” she returned quietly with a smile. Without another word, Harm and Mac returned to their respective offices for the remainder of the day. 0000 Zulu (1900 EST) 1205 8th St. Harm’s Apartment North of Union Station Harm was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner. He was wearing a black long sleeve shirt and black pants. Several pots were steaming on the stove. The table was set for two, with two candles decorating the center. Harm was nervously waiting for his dinner guest to arrive, when he heard a knock at the door. “Come in,” Harm called out as he took off the oven mitt from his uninjured arm, and shut off the stove. As Mac entered the apartment, Harm couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She was like a vision. She was wearing a knee length red dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. The neckline was just low enough to show off just the slightest bit of cleavage. Her black high heels made her long legs look amazing as they disappeared under the dress. “Harm?” Mac tried to get the attention of her partner. “What?” he asked as he snapped out of it. “I said, what’s for dinner?” she told him. “Oh, pasta and salad,” he replied, his eyes still locked on her incredible body. He always knew Mac was a beautiful woman, but tonight he was seeing her with different eyes. He didn’t see her as just his partner or even as his best friend. Tonight she was the woman who had captured his heart. The woman he cherished with every fiber of his being. Tonight, she was his. “You look incredibly beautiful Mac, Sarah,” Harm told her as he moved to meet her in the middle of the room. “I didn’t think you noticed,” she replied with a sly smile. “Oh believe me, I noticed,” he replied as he wrapped his uninjured arm around her and pulled her close to him. “You are so amazing,” he whispered. Before Mac had a chance to reply, Harm’s lips captured hers in a searing, earth shattering kiss. There was no denying it now and there was no turning back. He had her in his arms and was never letting her go. Mac could feel the desire rising up and coursing through her body. She felt so free and yet completely powerless at the same time. She had imagined what it would be like to be in his arms many times. Never in any of her fantasies did she expect it to feel anything like this. “I want you,” she whispered in her ear. Without another word or thought, Harm picked her up with his good arm and kissed her again. He walked them slowly into the bedroom. He gently placed her on the bed and removed her shoes, followed by his own. Harm took a moment and took in the sight of his true love lying before him on his bed, the material of her dress hanging loosely over her thighs. Mac leaned forward and placed her hand on the back of his neck. She pulled him toward her until he was lying on top of her and once again their lips touched. Harm wrapped his arm around her as he deepened the kiss. When it was evident that they both needed air, Harm broke the kiss and once again focused on the beautiful woman before him. “Are you sure you want to do this? We can wait if you’re not ready,” he told her. “I want this Harm. I want you,” she replied. “I love you Sarah,” he whispered as he brushed her cheek with the backs of his fingers. “I love you too,” she replied and pulled him towards her again, kissing him deeply. 1000 Zulu (0500 EST) 1205 8th St. Harm’s Apartment “Good morning beautiful,” Harm whispered as he gently tried to wake the woman snuggled up against him. “Harm,” she mumbled as she stirred to consciousness. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing; couldn’t be better, but its 0500,” he replied. “It’s Saturday Harm,” she replied as she turned to face him. “Oh. I guess it has been such a crazy week that I completely forgot today was Saturday,” he replied. “Are you okay with this, with everything Harm?” she asked. “Yes completely,” he replied. “Are you okay with this?” Mac didn’t reply she simply brushed a light kiss on his lips. “You know what is the best thing about it being Saturday, Harm?” she asked coyly. “We don’t have to get out of bed for two days?” he replied with a cocky smile. “My thoughts exactly,” she replied as she pulled him in for a kiss.
