Haley asked. "A while. But now I know there's no one else in this world I would trust with my life like I do Harm. He's been there both professionally and privately. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for him." "Why's that?" "Because I'd likely be spending life in prison for murdering my husband" Mac said quietly and Haley's eyes widened. "Oh my gosh. Harm defended you." "Yes he did and no one else would have done the job he did. And in the end he managed to save my career. Course he was just returning the favor since I'd done the same for him." "You guys really have had an interesting time together" Haley gasped. "There's more than just that but yes we have. And getting through all that is how we created the bond we have today." "It must be nice to know you have someone like that you can always count on," Haley said as she finished putting the laundry away. "It is. And I wouldn't trade having Harm as my partner for anything in the world." ++++++++++++ "JAG-San Diego" Ep. 4, Part 1a--- "I bet" Haley smiled. "Shall we go see what the guys are doing with dinner? I'm kind of afraid to see what they've done with the grill." "Harm's a good cook actually so I think we're in good shape" Mac laughed. "Except I forgot to tell you he doesn't eat meat." "How about chicken?" Haley asked. "I picked up a package at the store." "Perfect." They headed outside with the burgers and chicken to where Harm and Todd had gotten the barbecue all ready. "We ready to cook?" Mac asked. "Oh yeah this baby is perfect" Harm nodded. "Just stick those on there and we'll handle cooking them." A short time later they gathered around the small table on the balcony of Haley's apartment to eat. "Harm these are cooked perfectly" Haley said after biting into one of the burgers. "You're more than welcome to come over any time and cook for me." "See I told you he was good" Mac smiled. "I can see why you want to keep him" Haley laughed and Mac blushed slightly at her words. "So what's its like being back on dry land after all that time at sea?" Harm asked Todd. "Not bad. Especially since I managed to end up here." His gaze went to Haley as he spoke and she turned away quickly. "I bet you two are happy to be out here instead of in DC" Haley said as she changed the subject. "I saw they're getting more snow." "We need to send that postcard to Singer" Harm laughed. "And let her know how nice it is here." "Who's Singer?" Todd asked. "The biggest pain in my six" Harm smiled. "She's a slightly ambitious Lieutenant whose goal is to take over the world one day." "He's exaggerating" Mac laughed. "She's just set her sights on being the first female JAG." "She said that?" Todd asked. "Oh yeah" Harm nodded. "She's made it pretty clear that she's just going to step over us and take the big chair from the Admiral. Of course she doesn't know that Capt. Crosby is being mentioned for that little assignment." "Okay" Haley laughed. "I won't ask." "Don't" Mac smiled. After dinner they all helped with cleanup before changing into their suits. Harm and Todd were waiting when Haley and Mac emerged and Haley did her best too keep herself from staring at Todd. It was obvious he worked out, his chest perfectly sculpted. "Ocean or pool?" Todd asked, his eyes on Haley. She wore a simple one-piece suit but it still accented every curve on her thin frame. "Ocean" Harm spoke up. "Unless the ladies would rather stay at the pool." "Ocean's fine" Haley shrugged. "Mac is that okay with you?" "That's fine. Let's go." As men are wont to do, Harm and Todd trotted ahead and Mac simply shook her head. "I guess they can't be perfect gentlemen all the time." "Yeah but you'll have to admit the view from back here isn't that bad," Haley giggled. "Major," Mac gasped, pretending shock. "Yes ma'am but you're doing your share of looking, right?" "Of course. I'm not that old yet." With Todd and Harm already in the breakers, Mac and Haley plunged in after them. "Swim out for some diving?" Todd called, motioning to the six-foot square of planks anchored to the bottom beyond where the water was breaking. "Unless you little ladies are not much of a swimmer that is." "Now there's a challenge if I've ever heard one," Mac declared, and spotting the next large breaker, dove under it, coming up on the other side and making her way toward the platform with smooth clean strokes. At once Haley followed her, and Harm grabbed Todd's arm. ''They're making us look bad Commander." "You're right. Let's move out. Go Navy and all that." Mac and Haley had already pushed themselves onto the platform by the time Harm and Todd arrived. "OK which one of you Navy guys is going to show us Marines your diving form?" Mac demanded, leaning back on her elbows to observe the men lifting themselves from the water. Despite the age difference, Harm was still not hard on the eyes, especially in the stretch swimsuit he had on. "Uh. . .I think I'll go first," Harm decided. "That way I don't have to be embarrassed to follow up Mr. Universe here." He did a simple dive, swimming away from the platform and looking back. "Next?" "Let me show you ladies how it's done," Todd grinned and executed a perfect jack-knife, cutting into the water with barely a splash. "Impressive Commander," Haley called. "Mac?" "I'm not one to dive," she smiled and shook her head. "I'll just watch." "OK then." Haley nodded and walked primly to the edge of the platform, turning so that she was holding on only by the balls of her feet, her back to the water. As the three watched, she performed a perfect backflip into the water. But instead of surfacing at once as the men had, she dove deep into the water, clawing her way toward the bottom. "What the hell is she doing," Harm demanded, turning circles to look for her. "Harm where's Haley?" Mac called, getting to her feet. "Not sure. Todd?" "I don't see her either," he scowled. "Harm she should have come right back up. It was a simple dive." "Well she's not here," Harm growled and as if reading each other's minds, both men dove below the surface, only to have Todd emerge a few seconds later with Haley on his back. "I got you Commander. I got you big time," she gloated, laughing so hard she was choking on the water spray. "You think so do you," he screeched and shook her off, landing on her with a giant splash, pushing her under. Harm brought himself out of the water to sit beside Mac, she laughing hard as well. "Those two may turn out OK afterall," she gasped, watching them wrestle in the water. "Well it's moments like this that could help it to start," Harm nodded. "Of course they've got a lot to go through yet." They watched as Haley pushed herself away and swam back to the platform, only to have Todd roar from the water and grab her and they were at it again. "Why don't you and I just swim together," Harm offered, holding his hand to Mac. "Good idea. Hopefully the kids won't drown each other." They swam away from the platform, Harm reaching for Mac when they were far enough away that Todd and Haley wouldn't see them. "Having fun?" he whispered as he drew her against him. "It's getting better by the second" she smiled as she looked up at him. "You sure you don't want the nice buff younger man over there?" he asked. "No I'm pretty happy with my trusty old partner" she whispered before boldly leaning forward. He did the same and their lips met in a long kiss. "Besides my trusty old partner is pretty hot," she said breathlessly when they parted. "He is?" Harm smiled. "Oh yeah" she managed before his mouth covered hers in another kiss. "Okay what are they doing over there?" Todd asked as he pulled away from Haley long enough to look out to where Harm and Mac were standing. "You need me to explain?" she giggled. "They're kissing you big bozo." "That was a pretty long kiss," Todd said as he strained to see better. "Would you give them some privacy" she laughed as she slapped his arm playfully. "They don't need an audience." "Why not?" he laughed. "This is a public beach." "Come on Commander" she said as she took his arm. "I'll race you back to the shore. Then we're going to dig into that chocolate cake you brought." "You're on" he grinned and they dove into the water and headed towards the shore. He arrived first, panting hard as he dropped to the sand. "Beat yah" he managed when she joined him a moment later. "Not by much" she gasped. "Give me a few months here and I'll be right with you." "I'm sure you will," he said as he offered his hand to help her up. She took it and gave him a grateful smile. "I'm glad you joined us tonight. This has been fun." "Should we wait for Harm and Mac?" he asked as he peered out to where they were again. "Eventually they'll realize we left" she giggled. "But probably not for a while." She shivered in the now cool night air and he reached for her arm. "Come on before you freeze." In the water, Mac shivered as well as she and Harm finally parted from their kiss. "Is that from the cold or the kiss?" he smiled. "Both" she smiled. "I think we should head back in." "Where's Todd and Haley?" he asked as he glanced at the area around the platform. "Heading in" she said as she pointed to the two figures walking towards the apartment complex. "I guess they noticed we were otherwise occupied." "Slightly" Harm smiled. "Okay let's get you back in before you freeze out here." She nodded and they swam to the shore before hurrying across the beach to the building. They arrived at Haley's apartment just as Haley emerged from her bedroom in dry clothes. Part 1b follows immediately "JAG-San Diego" Ep.4, 1b/1---- Disclaimers and such in Part 1a "Have fun?" she grinned as she looked at the pair. "Major" Harm started. "I'm just teasing. Your secret is safe with Todd and me. We won't tell a soul." "Good. Now can I go change?" Mac shivered. "Bedroom's empty" Haley nodded. "Harm you're welcome to the bathroom. Todd went to his place to change and then he's coming back for cake." Todd was back and Haley was cutting the cake when Harm and Mac joined them. "Hey what happened to you two?" Todd teased. "We had some alone time" Harm smiled. "And that's all we're going to say on the subject." "And I see you two managed not to kill each other" Mac spoke up. "I think we're getting past the initial bad meeting" Todd smiled. "Right Haley?" "He's not so bad" she smiled as well. "Good" Harm nodded. "Cause tomorrow we're back at it with this investigation and it helps if we're all in this together." "Why don't you let Haley and I go talk to the Chief?" Todd suggested. "Can we trust you two to get along?" "Yes sir. Consider it a test for us." "OK you guys are on. Mac and I will stay back at JAG and await your report before we decide where to go from there. Mac?" "Yeah that's fine. We've got reports to file anyway about our first days out here. You should be able to find him on duty easily enough." "Well unless he's spending the day entertaining," Haley giggled. "How someone can be so different on duty and off is beyond me. It's like he's got a dual personality. Serious NCOIC by day, kinky sex fiend by night." "Does he need a new best friend?" Harm asked innocently. "Not you Flyboy," Mac told him, "and for that you can get me a coffee warmup." Small talk continued and an hour later Mac slipped quietly out the door, having seen the sky begin to glow and she wanted to see the sun set into the ocean. "You having some Mac alone time?" Harm asked softly from the doorway, having seen her leave and not sure if he should follow. She was standing a few yards away from the building, digging her bare feet into the sand, seemingly transfixed by the view. "I haven't been out here. Ever. And I don't know if I'll ever be back. So I don't want to miss a single sunset if I can help it," she explained, adding hesitantly, "but they're best shared." "Yeah they are," he agreed, coming up behind her and dropping his hands on her shoulders. "And there's probably something that says kissing under one is good luck or something." "Oh good grief that's the lamest line I think I've ever heard," she laughed as he leaned forward over her back and she turned around to accept his kiss. "We are so different three thousand miles away from DC," she sighed when it was over. "Makes me not want to go back. Ever." "That can be arranged you know," he replied and at the serious tone in his voice she opened her eyes wide. "Yeah? OK I'll play devil's advocate. How so Sailor?" He smiled and shrugged. "Our law degrees are good in the civilian world is all I'm saying. If JAG isn't working for us any more. . ." "OK you're scaring me," she frowned, "because I know you well enough to know when you're being at least partly serious. You have actually thought about this, at least in passing." "Yeah guilty OK? Because we are different out here. We haven't been here all that long, but we are different, and it's a different that I like, and I'm not sure I'm willing to risk giving it up when we go back." For a long moment she could not formulate her reply, finally swallowing hard to enable her to speak. "We are not just different mister. I swear you're possessed." "Maybe. Or maybe it's just me realizing what's been in front of me all along. Seeing Haley and Todd just makes me think how much time we've wasted. We were them seven years ago. And this is as far as we've gotten since then." "So we took the scenic route" she smiled. "But we're on the right path aren't we?" "I think we are. And I think being here alone has helped us see that we are on the right path. And I don't to stray off when we get back to DC. Cause if we are then I don't want to go back." "Harm we both know what we want" she said slowly. "I don't think we're going to let it get away from us this time." "I hope not" he smiled. "Because the past few days with you have been wonderful and I want it to continue. No matter where we are." "It will" she whispered. "If we let it." She leaned forward for another kiss and from the apartment Haley watched with a smile. "Are they at it again?" Todd asked as he leaned over her shoulder and looked out. "Oh yeah. But we probably shouldn't stand here watching them." He nodded and together they walked to the living room. "Thanks for tonight" he said finally. "I had a good time." "Me too. You know we could car pool in the morning if you want. Save some gas money for both of us." "You think that's a good idea?" he laughed. "Well I might need to do the driving but it could work out" she smiled. "Otherwise I'd go crazy sitting in the front seat with you." "We can talk about it some more. But we might be able to work something out." "Work what out?" Harm asked as he and Mac walked into the living room. "Driving to work together" Haley smiled. "Now that would be a real test to see if you two have buried the hatchet" Mac laughed. "Can I ask who's going to drive?" "We're still working that one out" Todd replied. "I'm not sure I'm ready to drive with Ms. Mario Andretti here but I guess we'll figure it out." "We'll leave you two to that one then" Harm smiled. "We're going to get out of here. Thanks for dinner. Everything was great." "Thanks to your cooking" Haley laughed. "You are more than welcome to come over anytime and cook. I'll just supply the food." "Sounds good. We'll see you two tomorrow." Haley walked them to the door and Todd hung out until they were gone. "Thanks again for dinner. I'll get out of your hair now." "Thanks for coming to my rescue in the laundry room" she said softly. "I really appreciate it. And I'm sorry if I've come off a bit rough at first. It just takes me awhile to let people get to know me." "Well I hope we can get to know each other better. I'd like that a lot." "We will" she nodded. "Some things just take time. But I think we may have gotten past the major stumbling block." "I'm glad. Cause I don't know about you but this is a big deal for me and I didn't want to blow it." "Me too. And I think we'll be okay from here." "See you tomorrow" he smiled as he headed towards the door. "Are we carpooling?" she grinned. "Sure. I'll even let you drive." "Deal. Just knock on my door when you're ready to leave." He nodded and opened the door. "Night Haley. Make sure you lock up tight." "I will. Night Todd." With a sigh she closed the door behind him before locking the deadbolt in place. It has been interesting day. And Todd Harper was turning out to be an okay guy. "Friends only Haley" she reminded herself. She wasn't going to allow herself to get too attached to Todd Harper. She'd done that before and the wounds from Devon's death were still there. She'd get to know Todd but she wasn't going to allow the bond to grow. Not this time. ******************** San Diego JAG HQ's Next Morning "Am I seeing okay?" Captain Crosby asked as Todd and Haley walked into the office together, laughing and talking as they did so. "Yes ma'am" Harm smiled. "I think we've gotten past the first hurdle." "How'd you manage that?" she asked. "We didn't actually" Mac laughed. "They did it." "Well whatever. . whoever, I'm relieved and glad," she nodded approvingly. "What's the plan for today?" "Ma'am we're going to let them try to talk to Senior Chief McClendon while we get into some reports," Harm offered. "You think that's wise?" "I think they can handle it," he nodded. "And if we see any slack, we'll pick it up. It's good experience for them." "I agree. Keep me posted." "Yes ma'am." They walked out and met Haley and Todd getting coffee. "You two ready to go?" Mac asked. "Oh yes ma'am," Todd grinned. "We'll make you proud." =========== A short trip across the facility to the Senior Chief's duty station was fruitless. He was on the roster for the day but not yet reported. "The man is late I'm sorry what can I say ma'am, sir," the young ensign in charge frowned nervously. "I've called and got no answer from his apartment and his cell phone isn't working either." "In other words he's UA," Todd observed. "Have you reported that to your CO son?" "No sir. They kind of. . .well sir the Navy needs people like him. You know sir, people who've been around forever and know what they're doing." "Is there a point here Ensign?" "Yes ma'am. Lt. Cdr. Winters cuts him some slack. Often." "I'm getting the picture," Todd groused. "OK here's what's going to happen. If you see him, you're calling us at once, and you're to order him to stay put. Clear?' "Oh yes sir." The young man hurried back to his duties and Todd shook his head. "You know I've had some screw ups in my career and no one cut me any slack that I recall. . .well OK once. . .when. . .uh, never mind. Why don't we drive out and see if the Chief is oversleeping." Haley nodded and directed Todd to the apartment complex where she and Mac were yesterday. "You're kidding," Todd gasped. "I realize we don't live at LaJolla by the Sea but honestly this place looks like a Japanese Internment Camp from World War II." "Yeah I know," she nodded. "What can I say--the man uses his money for other things." They made the long climb to the third floor and knocked loudly with no reply. "Big surprise," Haley muttered and shook her head when she saw Todd attempting to peer through the drapes. "Those things are impenetrable. Forget it. Let's knock on the neighbor's door there. He knew about the Chief yesterday." A few seconds later that door was opened by the same man to whom Mac and Haley had spoken. The TV was blaring and both little girls were screaming. "Wife leaves at 5AM for work," he sighed. "Leaves me to get them ready for the sitter, and then wonders why she comes home to such a mess." "Right, and since we're not child welfare or the health department we don't care," Todd smiled. "You wouldn't have any idea about McClendon next door would you Mr. uh. . .?" "Fox. And actually yeah strange thing," Thomas Fox frowned. "Like I said, Lisa goes to work at 5, and this morning she couldn't get her stupid car started so I had to come out and give her a jump start from mine. Anyway, we're fooling around and I see McClendon and two other guys in the parking lot. Now this guy is strange and he has strange friends so I didn't think too much about it, but they all of a sudden started walking over that way toward the water. I have no idea why. There's an old club house building over there that belonged to this place at one time but it's been boarded up long as I can remember. Now excuse me. I've got to get these kids to the sitter and me to work. Lisa thinks she's the only one who does anything around here, but I work too." "Yes sir. Thanks Mr. Fox." Haley gave him a wide smile and they stepped out. "Now what?" "I say we go check out the club house." "You think he's still there?" Haley frowned. "Maybe he got drunk and passed out with his buddies" Todd shrugged. "You heard what the guy said about him and his friends. Strange." "All right. Let's take a walk." They started down towards the water, finally spotting the boarded up building that Mr. Fox had been referring to. "I can think of better places to go get drunk" Haley sighed as they reached the building. "This place looks like it's about to fall in." "I'm surprised they haven't torn it down. This could be dangerous to kids if they got in here." Haley nodded and walked up to what at one time had been the door to the clubhouse. Boards that had once kept the door from opening had been removed and she gave the door a gentle nudge. "Chief McClendon?" she called softly as she started to walk in. "Hey wait" Todd said as he grabbed her arm and tugged her back. "I'll go in first. You stay behind me." "Oh please" she groaned. "Don't even start the macho man routine." "Haley stay back" he ordered before stepping in front of her and walking into the clubhouse. He was glad he did for a moment later he came face to face with a very dead Chief McClendon, the rope still tied tightly around his throat. Todd barely managed to turn away before everything he'd had for breakfast came out. "Todd what. . . oh my god" she gasped a moment later as she came up behind him. "Don't look" he gasped. But she'd already caught sight of the Chief, his eyes wide open and staring at her. Just like Devon's had when he'd died in her arms that night. She closed her eyes but they were both still there. And then she started to scream. "Haley stop" Todd managed as he turned and reached for her. He grabbed her and pulled her against him, her screams now muffled against his chest. "Come on" he whispered as he tried to led her from the clubhouse. For a moment she didn't move, her screams still continuing as he held her against him. "Haley please" he begged. "Come on." Finally her screams stopped and mutely he led her from the clubhouse. Once outside he reached for his phone and immediately dialed the number for the JAG office. "Commander Rabb please" he said shakily, his arms still around Haley who seemed to be numb. "It's urgent." "This is Commander Rabb" Harm answered a moment later. "Harm its Todd. We found Chief McClendon in the old clubhouse at his apartment complex. He's dead. Very dead." As he spoke the image of the dead man ran through his head and he thrust the phone at Haley before turning away as his stomach revolted again. "Todd" Harm yelled. "Todd are you there?" "It's Haley sir" she managed, her voice distant and trembling. "Okay just try and stay calm" he ordered gently. "Mac and I will be there in a few minutes with the authorities. Just stay tight and don't touch anything." "Yes sir" she said before hanging up. "What's wrong?" Mac demanded as Harm hung up. "That was Todd wasn't it?" "They found Chief McClendon dead" Harm sighed. "I didn't get any more details except that they found him somewhere at the apartment complex. And from the sounds of it they're both in shock. I was talking to Todd and then suddenly I had Haley." TO BE CONTINUED in EP 5 on Jan. 14, 2003
