Happily Ever After Tsarina Smith Rated: PG-13/R Disclaimer: All I own is a blue Honda. The character of Dr. Eve Lambert-Baldwin was borrowed from Port Charles. Third in the Hotel Bora Bora Series. This takes place a year after the wedding. Part 1 “Mmm.” Mac smiled as she rolled over in bed. She opened her eyes and looked at her husband. He was staring at her, a small smile on his face. “Hey.” He leaned over and gently touched his lips to hers. “Hey.” “Happy Anniversary.” Harm smiled and sat up in bed. “Oh, is today our anniversary? I forgot.” She playfully smacked him, and smiled as he pulled her close for another kiss. “So, Mr. Rabb, what are your plans for today?” Harm and Bobbie had won the election by a landslide. “Bobbie and I are meeting with some senators and then we are having lunch with the press secretary.” “What time will you be home?” He grinned. “Early enough for us to celebrate our year of wedded bliss.” They were sharing another kiss, when Chloe knocked on the door. She stuck her head in, and then came in. “Happy Anniversary.” “Thanks, sweetie.” Mac said. She started to get out of bed, when she swayed and sat back down. “Chloe rushed over to her and Harm jumped into protective husband mode. “Mac, baby, are you okay?” She nodded. “Yeah. I just feel kind of dizzy.” “You gonna be okay?” Chloe asked. Mac nodded. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.” *** “How is that possible?” Mac asked the doctor. “What do you mean? I thought you’d be happy about this.” She swallowed. “I was told it would be incredibly difficult to become pregnant. Harm and I haven’t even discussed children yet, because we didn’t think it was possible.” Dr. Lambert-Baldwin looked over her chart. “It was thought to be almost impossible. But, hey, miracles happen every day.” “Yeah, I guess.” She looked at the doctor and forced a smile. “Thanks Eve.” Mac stood up and gathered her things and took the paper she was handed. “it’s a prescription for prenatal vitamins. Make an appointment with an OB as soon as possible.” “I will. Thanks again.” Eve smiled, “No problem.” The two women hugged. “Call me, we’ll have to get together outside of this office sometime.” Mac smiled. “You bet.” Once in the lobby, she pulled her cell phone out of her bag and called JAG. Bud answered. “Bud, can you grab Turner for me, I need to talk to him.” Turner was quickly put on the phone. “Sturgis Turner here.” “Turner, its Mac. I need you to be acting JAG today. I have a doctors appointment, and its going to take longer then I thought.” “No problem Mac. Is everything ok?” She sighed. “Yeah, fine. Just check ups and stuff. I’ll call to check in in a little while.” “Good luck Mac.” “Bye.” She hung up the phone and tossed it in her bag. *** Harm sat in Bobbie’s office, staring at his cup of coffee. “Harm, what’s wrong? You’ve been quiet all morning.” He sighed. “Mac wasn’t feeling well this morning. And I’m kind of worried. She never gets sick.” Bobbie smiled. “Maybe she’s pregnant.” Harm shook his head. “That would be the most amazing thing ever, but its not possible.” “The doctor said it wasn’t likely, but I didn’t think it was impossible.” *** Harm unlocked the door to the house and walked inside. “Mac, honey.” The fact that she was home before him made him slightly uneasy. He looked up at the stairs, and gasped. “Wow.” The light blue dress molded over her curves and brought out the darkness of her skin. She walked down and kissed him softly. “You like.” He grabbed her and kissed her much more passionately. “I like very much.” He kissed her again. “I love you.” She smiled. “Go upstairs and change. We have reservations at The Lamplighter in 30 minutes.” He raised his eyebrows. “I’m impressed. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He ran up the stairs to change and she collapsed on the couch. Mac smiled at her surroundings. The house was beautiful. She’d never forget the day her and Harm came home from their honeymoon, and Trish said it was their wedding present. It was beautiful. It looked just like the one in ‘Father of the Bride’, she had thought. They were shocked. While on the trip, Trish, Frank, Chloe and everyone else had moved all of their stuff in the house. It was beautiful. And very much a home. It was the perfect place to raise a family. Her thoughts were interrupted by her husband bouncing down the stairs. “Lets go.” He said with a smile. He took his wife’s hand, grabbed the keys to the ‘vette. Once at the car, being the perfect gentlemen that he was, he opened her door, and kissed her quickly once she was seated. He went around to his side and got in, and they left. They arrived at the Lamplighter about 15 minutes later. Harm handed the keys to the valet and escorted his beautiful wife inside. They were sat at an exquisite table. “Happy anniversary, honey.” Harm said. She smiled. “Happy anniversary.” A while later, they sat over their dinner, talking, laughing, being very happy and in love. “So,” Harm asked, “do you want your present now?” She smiled. “Yes.” He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a tiny little box. He handed it to her and she smiled as she accepted it. “I thought the first anniversary was the paper anniversary.” He grinned. “Oh, just open it.” Mac bit her lower lip and opened the box. She laughed as she saw what was in it. “Cute, Harm.” It was a tiny little paper airplane. “Unfold it.” She unfolded the tiny airplane and smiled as she read the piece of paper. “A gift certificate for that new shoe store.” Harm smiled. “Well, you have the great career, I’d like to think you have a good man, I just want to be sure you have comfortable shoes.” Mac leaned over to kiss him softly. “Thank you. I love you.” She sucked in a deep breath. “Ok. Time for yours.” She handed him an envelope. She wasn’t sure she was breathing as he opened it. He pulled out the piece of paper and looked up at her in confusion. “I don’t get it. A gift certificate for a baby store?” Mac nodded. “Harm, I… I’m pregnant.” The gift certificate fell from his hands to the table. “What?” He looked at her, the shock evident on his face, “But how? I thought…” She swallowed. “They said it wasn’t likely, but they never said it couldn’t happen.” She looked at him, her eyes large and pleading. “Harm say something please.” He stood up. He did it with such a calmness, that she honestly thought for a moment that he would walk out on her. Instead, he grabbed her hand, pulled her up and into his arms. Then, he stepped away from her and grabbed her face, kissing her gently. “You’re serious? We’re going to have a baby?” She nodded. “Yes. Are you happy about it?” He smiled. “Are you kidding? Happy doesn’t begin to describe it!” he grabbed her and twirled them around. “Oh my God, did that hurt you or the baby?” She stepped back. “No, its fine.” “Oh my God, we’re having a baby.” He kissed her again. “Sarah, I love you so much.” She smiled, tears in her eyes. She looked around the restaurant. “Baby, they’re watching us.” Harm laughed. “I don’t care!” He looked out at the other patrons. “We’re having a baby!” Mac laughed and buried her face in his neck as everyone began to applaud. “I love you.” He whispered. End part 1 Part 2 Harm stared at his beautiful wife. She looked so angelic snuggled in the pale yellow sheet. She moaned and rolled over on her back. He timidly placed his hand on her stomach and sighed. She was pregnant. He couldn’t believe it. Her eyes slowly opened and she looked at him and smiled. Then she looked at her stomach, where his hand was still resting. “Its way to early to feel anything yet.” “I know.” He said softly. “I’m just in awe. Our baby is in there. The baby we doubted that we would ever have. I love you so much, and I promise I’ll be a great father to our baby.” She sat up and put her hand on his cheek. “Honey, I know you’ll be. You’re a great dad to Chlo, and you have so much love to give. I know you’re going to be a wonderful father.” Harm smiled and leaned in to kiss her. “Chloe and this baby are so lucky to have you as a mom.” He kissed her quickly again before crawling out of bed. “Have you told anyone yet?” “Nope. I plan on telling Harriet today though.” “Yeah, I thought I’d tell Bobbie today too. And of course call mom, and Grandma. They are both going to be so happy.” She smiled and nestled back under the covers. “Tell them both that I love them very much.” “Will do.” *** “Oh my God!” Harriet squealed. She grabbed her best friend, giving her the hug to end all hugs. “God, Mac, I am so happy for you guys. I‘d love to be his or her godmother!” Mac smiled at her best friend. “We’re happy for you guys too.” Harriet was still small in her third month of pregnancy. “I always wanted a houseful of children,” she said with a sigh, “but this ones going to be it. The morning sickness is going to kill me.” “Don’t mention that, please. I’ve been lucky so far, but I don’t know if my luck is going to hold up.” “Oh, I bet it will.” Harriet sighed. “There’s something I need to talk to you about. Its really important.” “Is everything okay? Are Maddie or AJ sick?” “No, they’re both perfect, thank God, but it does involve them.” She cleared her throat. “I’ve decided that once I take my maternity leave, I’m not coming back.” Mac’s eyes went huge. “What? You’re kidding me. Why?” “I want to be there for my kids. My dream has always been first and foremost to be a good wife and mother. I just… well… the NAVY isn’t what I need anymore. AJ is 5 years old. He’s so big, and he’s starting school. I want to be part of the PTA and carpool and do all of that. And Maddie is growing up so fast. JAG just isn’t as important to me as it is to you, and Bud, and everyone else.” Mac had tears in her eyes. “I’m going to miss you.” Harriet got up and hugged her friend. “We’ll still see each other all the time. In fact, once you go back to work after maternity leave, how would you feel about me taking care of your baby?” “Harriet, that would be perfect.” “I want our kids to be close. And I know I’m going to love my godchild so much.” “How does Bud feel about this?” Mac asked gently. Harriet smiled. “He said he’d support me no matter what I want to do. But I think he secretly loves the idea of me being a stay at home mom.” Mac smiled. She hoped that Harm didn’t expect her to quit once their baby was born. As much as she wanted and would love her family, she loved her career too. *** A Month Later Mac, Harm and Chloe settled in around the table for dinner. Mac watched as the girl aimlessly twirled the pasta around her plate. “Honey, is something wrong?” Chloe looked up. “No, nothings wrong.” She looked at Mac, and then at harm. “I have something to ask you guys, and I know you’re going to say no, but I have to ask anyways.” She stopped again. “Um… Charlie and his mom and step dad asked me if I wanted to go skiing with them this weekend. Can I go?” Harm and Mac looked at one another and exchanged glances. “Sweetie, I don’t know.” Harm said. “You’re 15 years old. You are too young to be going out of town with your boyfriend.” “But Daddy,” Chloe said, “His parents and Kelly, are going too. Its not like we’re going to be alone. And like you said, I’m only 15. Its not like I plan on having sex anytime in the next couple of years.” “Chlo, we will need to talk about it, and talk to Charlie’s parents. We’ll let ya know tomorrow, ok?” Mac stood up and carried her plate to the sink. “Please daddy, please.” “We’ll see…” He turned when he heard glass shattering on the floor. “Mac!” He got up and ran over to her, Chloe at his heels. “Baby?” She stirred. “Honey, what happened?” She groaned. “I don’t know. I just had a cramp, oh God. The baby. Harm, what if something is wrong with the baby?” Chloe grabbed his keys. “Come on. Lets go to the hospital.” Harm helped his wife up and took the keys from Chloe, and rushed them down to the car. Once at the hospital, Chloe and Harm wrapped their arms around Mac’s waist and helped her to the front desk. “We need to see Dr. Baldwin now.” Harm said. “My wife collapsed.” Before the nurse could have Eve paged, she walked up. “Hey Mac.” She noticed her very good looking husband latched on to her and immediately became concerned. “What happened?” “I was taking a plate to the sink, and I had this horrible cramp and collapsed.” She watched as Eve took her chart and led her into an empty exam room. “Can you guys wait outside while I examine her?” Eve asked. Harm nodded. “yeah. Come on Chlo, lets go outside and discuss this ski trip.” Once outside, seated in the uncomfortable chairs, Chloe took Harm’s hand. “Dad, mom and my sister are going to be fine.” He smiled. “Your sister? How do you know its going to be a girl?” Chloe grinned. “Just a feeling I got when mom and I were talking the other night.” *** Eve looked at the machine and grimaced. She looked at the test results in her hand and felt a headache coming on. “Eve, what’s happening?” Mac asked. “I’m going to bring your family in. You’re going to need support, Mac.” She felt the tears well up. “It’s bad isn’t it?” Eve walked over to the door and asked Harm and Chloe to come in. Chloe sat in a chair, while he hovered over his wife. “Eve, what’s wrong?” Mac asked, her fear growing. Eve took a deep breath. “Sarah, the condition we thought would prevent you from having children has made an appearance in a big way. There is a… You may not survive this pregnancy.” She watched at tears fell from her patients eyes, and as Harm and Chloe went ghost white. “What.. How?” Mac stammered. “Your reproductive system isn’t strong enough to handle the strain a pregnancy would put on it. You could die in childbirth, in the courtroom, wherever. It could happen any place, any time.” “Is there any chance I could survive?” She asked in between sobs. Eve looked her in the eye. “Mac, if you carry this pregnancy to term, there is a 48% that you will survive.” She cleared her throat. The odds of the baby surviving are much higher. The odds of you both surviving are about 26%. The best option would be to terminate this pregnancy right now. You’re only three months along, and as much as I hate to say this, I think an abortion would be for the best.” “You want me to kill my baby?” Mac whispered, in shock. “Mac, if there was any other way I could guarantee your survival, I would, but I can‘t. “I can’t kill my baby. I wont do it.” “Mac.” Harm said, his voice dry and anguished. “Mom, please.” Chloe said at the same time. “I’ll give you guys some time to talk.” Eve said, before grabbing her papers and leaving them alone. Mac looked at her husband, and her daughter. “I can’t kill this baby. I won’t do it.” Chloe eyes brimmed over and she stood. “So that’s it. This baby is all that matters to you? What about me? Do you realize how much I love you? Do you realize you’ll be the 3rd guardian I’ve had to die? Don’t you care about me or dad, or is this baby all that matters. Because she has your blood?” She stopped for a minute. “Enjoy your time with your precious baby. You wont need me anymore.” Chloe stormed out of the room, crying harder then she could ever imagine. Harm looked at the door, then at his wife. “I’ll be back in a minute.” He walked out after Chloe, while his wife wiped the tears from her eyes. He found their daughter leaning against the wall, crying. “Chlo?” She wiped her eyes and looked up. “Daddy. How can she do this? Doesn’t she care about us?” Harm wrapped his arms around her. “Yes, of course she does. She loved you so much. I want you to sit. I’m going to go talk to her, and then we’ll go home and discuss this as a family.” Chloe nodded, and Harm walked back into the exam room. His wife was sitting, on the bed, staring at something in her wallet. “Sarah?” She looked up, her watery eyes meeting his. “Hey.” He sat down next to her on the bed. “What-cha looking at?” She handed her leopard print wallet to him. The picture insert was opened to a photograph of the three of them at the wedding. “How’s Chloe?” “Devastated.” Harm closed the wallet and handed it back to her. “Mac, this baby isn’t the only one who needs you.” “But he or she is the only one who’s life is in my hands.” She sighed. “I don’t want to discuss this here. Lets go home, ok?” He nodded. “Ok.” *** Harm unlocked the door, and held it open for his wife and daughter. Chloe sat down while Mac went in the kitchen to start a kettle of tea. Once it was started she sat down on the floor in the living room. She leaned against the back of the loveseat and looked over to Chloe, laying on the floor in front of the TV, and Harm, standing by the window. “Chloe, my decision has nothing to do with how much I love you.” Chloe turned and looked at her, causing the tears to come again. “Why? Mom. Why? Why can’t y’all adopt? Why do you have to risk your life for a baby. You only found out you were pregnant a month ago. You couldn’t have bonded that quickly. Am I not enough?” “I’m with Chlo,” Harm said, “I don‘t understand. This is my child too. I love him or her so much already, but I love you more. I can’t lose you.” “Harm, that’s it. You said that you love this baby so much already. Think of how I feel. This baby is inside of me. For the next 6 months, her welfare is my responsibility. Can you imagine how much I love her? Right now, I am closer to her then anyone else in the world is. And I can’t kill her. I can’t.” Mac stood up and walked over to Chloe. She sat down in front of her. “Chloe, I love you so much. I don’t love this baby anymore then I love you. You are so important to me. You, Harm and this baby mean more to me then anyone or anything in the world. And I’d risk my life to protect any of you.” Harm walked over to them. “Mac, this is insane. Absolutely f**king insane. What is this child going to do without her mother. What about Chloe? What about me? You were wrong when you said that this baby was the only one who’s life was in your hands. I can’t live without you.” Mac stood up and gave him a gentle kiss. She looked back down at Chloe. “Hopefully you won’t have to. But no way in hell am I going to kill this child. She needs me. And I’m going to be there for her. No matter what.” End part 2 Part 3 Everything was quiet. Harm walked over to the coffin and looked inside. His beautiful wife lay inside. Her beautiful brown eyes were closed. Her face was only made more beautiful by the gentle traces of make up. He kissed his fingertips and placed them gently on her lips. “Why. Why, baby, why?” Harm jerked up with a jolt. He turned over and saw her nestled in the covers. Harm lay back down and sighed. He couldn’t believe this was happening. Why? It was impossible to understand. They had only just started their life together, and it was possible that he could lose her. Harm lifted his hand and brushed a strand of hair off of her forehead. Making as little noise as possible, he slid out of bed, and went into the living room. Falling to his knees, the prayers began to come. “God, don’t do this to us. Please. I can’t lose her. Living without her is not even a possibility for me. Chloe and I need her, please don’t take her from us.” He wiped the tears from his eyes and went back into the bedroom. He climbed in next to his wife and pulled her tightly against him. “I love you, Sarah.” *** “Eve there has to be something you can do. You can’t let my wife die. I need her.” Eve sat down in her chair and looked at Harm. Her heart went out to him. “Harm, she’s not willing to have an abortion. That kind of ties my hands.” “Isn’t there something that could increase her chances? Make her stay in bed the whole time, take some kind of medicine? Eve, I’m desperate. I’ll do anything. I’ll try anything. Please.” Her heart went out to him. He was so distraught with the thought that he could lose his wife. And she felt horrible that there was nothing she could do. “Harm, there is nothing I can do. Mac is willing to risk it. I can’t knock her out and give her an abortion. I would lose my license and go to jail. I shouldn’t be discussing her case with you either. Just pray, just pray that God will realize how needed she is and let her get through this. Harm, I can tell you one thing. She needs you. And she needs Chloe. I know neither one of you approve of her decision, but staying on her case about it isn’t going to help anything.” He sighed. “I know, I know. I’ll try, ok. I promise, I’ll try. Its just… I love her so much. I can’t bear the thought of losing her.” *** Harriet reeled in shock with what Mac told her. “There’s a chance you could die?” She whispered. Mac nodded, tears filling her eyes. “Yeah. The only way I’m guaranteed survival is to have an abortion. And there is no way I can do that. I just wish Harm and Chloe could understand.” Harriet sighed and leaned back in her chair. “I understand your side and theirs. Being a mother means being willing to sacrifice yourself for your children. You are being a mom. But as a friend, I can honestly say that I wish you’d consider ending the pregnancy. I love you and I don’t want to lose you. But I can’t yell at you, or say anything, because if I was in your position, I wouldn’t consider it either.” “Thank you. I’m so relieved that someone understands. As it is right now, I don’t have anyone’s support.” Just then, the door to the office opened. Mac rose, preparing to chew out one of her officers. When she saw it was her husband, she calmed and sat down. “Harm. What are you doing here?” He walked over to her, grabbed her, holding her close to him. Once she got her bearings, she pulled back. “What was that for?” “Sarah, I love you. And I know this situation can’t be easy for you. And my acting like a baby isn’t going to help it any. I’m going to be here for you, I’m going to love you, and I’m going to support you no matter what. Whatever happens, and wherever this pregnancy leads us, we’re going to make it there together. Ok?” She lunged herself back in his arms. “I love you so much.” *** 4 months later At seven months pregnant, Mac was rather large. She was allowed to work up untill her seventh month, and then there was nothing nut bed rest. Harm and Chloe had changed their attitudes drastically. They were fully supportive of Mac and this pregnancy. Wherever it would lead. Mac stepped out of the shower. Then she fell. “HARM!” She screamed. She rolled herself into a ball, waiting for her husband. He ran as quickly as he could to her and slid to his knees beside her when he saw her crumpled on the floor. He grabbed the phone and dialed for an ambulance. “The baby.” She whispered. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. Harm placed one hand on her stomach as he talked to the dispatcher. His fear reached a new level when he noticed the blood pooling beneath her. He hung up the phone and put it on the floor next to them. “Baby, the ambulance is on its way. You have to hold on, ok?” He leaned down to kiss her, trying not to cry. They lay there, him holding her when the ambulance burst in. Harm had told them they would be upstairs, and to come on up. “We’re in here!” He yelled. One of the paramedics got the stretcher ready, while the others checked her vitals, calling them in. “I’m going with her.” Harm said. It took less then three minutes to have her strapped in the ambulance, them on their way. At the ER, they rushed her in, making Harm stand behind. “Sir, you have to stay here.” The doctor said. “We’ll let you know when WE know something.” It took all he had to follow their orders and stay outside. After filling out the forms, he got out his phone and began making the obligatory phone calls. Turner was left in charge of JAG, Harriet was on her way over. Being eight months pregnant, she was supposed to be taking it easy, but she had to be there for her friend. She greeted Harm with a kiss on the cheek. “How is she?” Harm nodded, numbly. “I don’t know. They haven’t told me anything yet.” She sat next to him, and grabbed his hand. She squeezed it comfortably, and looked at him. “Will you pray with me?” He nodded and bowed his head with her, while she began to pray. “Dear God, our Sarah is in your hands now. Please watch over her, and care for her, and heal her with only the power that you possess. Please bring her and the baby she wanted so bad back to us. In your precious name we pray, Amen.” “Amen.” Harm repeated. “Harriet, do you believe that God answers prayers?” “Yeah. I do.” She sighed. “For a while, after baby Sarah died, I didn’t believe in much of anything anymore. But everything… I wouldn’t say it worked out, but it became good again. Waking up in the morning isn’t hard anymore. I have a reason to live. With Maddie, I did pretty much nothing but pray. And everything is wonderful.” “I’ve been praying more or less non stop since Eve told Mac she may not survive. I could live with losing the baby. I would be utterly devastated, but I would survive. I couldn’t handle losing Sarah. I think I would probably die.” Harriet was about to respond when the doctors walked out. They both stood. “Mr. Rabb?” He said. Harm nodded, and took a few steps closer. “Your wife is out of immediate danger. She… Mr. Rabb, she was in labor. We had to deliver the baby.” “Is the baby ok?” He asked, tears already pouring out of his eyes, “I mean, I know its early, but a baby can survive at seven months, right?” “Yes sir. Your wife took very good care of herself. The baby is quite small. She is 3 pounds, 6 ounces. But, she is in NICU. We have every reason to believe she’s going to be fine.” Harm released a sigh of relief. “How is my wife?” “Mr. Rabb, you’re wife is in critical condition. You and her were aware that this pregnancy could be fatal. We have done everything we possibly can. It’s in God’s hands now.” The tears were wiped away, and he found his voice. “May I see her.” The doctor nodded. “Yeah. Go on in.” “Harm, I’m going to go get Chloe.” Harm looked at her, the expression going from devastated to stricken. “Oh God. Chloe.” He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. “Thank you Harriet.” Once she was gone, he went into the room. “Oh Mac. Why? Please God, let her get through this.” Harm sat next to her bed, picked up her hand and lay his head down, sobbing for the woman he loved. Part 4 “Dad!” Chloe exclaimed as she ran into her mothers room. He stood up and immediately pulled her to him in a warm hug. “Oh God, its bad isn’t it.” Harm pulled back. The past couple of hours wreaked havoc on his face. He looked much older then he was, and his eyes were blood red. “It’s bad, Chloe. The baby is more then likely going to be okay.” He smiled for a brief moment. “You have a sister. And she’s beautiful. But Mac, She um, she lost a lot of blood, and they think the strain could have been too much. The next couple of hours are going to be critical.” He began to cry again, “Chloe, I don’t think its going to work out. They don’t think she’s going to make it.” Chloe began to sob and latched on to Harm. “I need to see the baby.” Chloe pulled back, her eyes cold. “I need to see why my mother gave up her life.” “I think Sarah needs you more right now.” Harm sat back down. “She needs us, Chloe. She needs us here. Besides, we can’t see the baby yet. Eve promised to come get me when I can.” Not even five minutes later, Eve walked into the room. “Harm, you can see your daughter now.” Harm smiled and stood up. He lifted his wife’s hand and kissed it gently. “I’m going to see our baby, Sarah. When I get back, I’ll tell you everything about her.” He left Chloe alone and followed Eve. “How is she?” He asked. “That is one hell of a fighter. She’s got her mothers spirit.” Eve opened the door and led Harm to the incubator. The tiny little girl squirmed. Harm was immediately taken by her. “She’s beautiful. She looks just like Sarah.” He smiled. “She has my eyes though.” Eve grinned. “Most babies are born with blue eyes.” “I know I’m going to sound like Rhett Butler, but her eyes are going to stay blue.” Harm looked at her. “May I touch her, or hold her?” Eve smiled. “Yeah, go sterilize your hands and slip them in here.” Harm went and did as he was told, and then slid his hands in. The little girl squirmed under his touch. “Oh, she’s so tiny.” “Her lungs are well developed for her age and size. He neurological systems are all developed and intact. There is a very good chance she’ll be able to go home in a week or two.” She stuffed her hands into her pockets. “How’s Mac?” Harm swallowed, as he stroked his baby daughters hand. “They um, they don’t think she’s going to make it.” Eve grimaced. “Just have faith. Pray. Tell her all about your daughter.” She smiled. “Did y’all have a name picked out?” “We had decided on Caroline Nicole. But, I think Caroline Faith is a little more appropriate. Caroline Faith Rabb. Welcome to this messed up world.” Eve sighed. “Why don’t you go back to your wife, I need to examine Caroline some more.” Harm nodded and pulled his hands away. “Yeah, I need to go tell her about our daughter.” He stood. “Thank you, Eve.” The two friends embraced and Harm left, heading back to his wife’s room. He looked at her, Chloe still by her side. Harm placed his hands on Chloe’s shoulders. “There wouldn’t happen to be any change?” Chloe shook her head. “No.” She turned to look at him. “How is my sister?” Harm smiled. “She’s perfect. Caroline Faith Rabb.” He looked at his wife. “Do you hear that, Marine? We have a beautiful little girl. She is absolutely perfect. She’s going to need her mom, though. Both of our girls will. Mac, you can’t leave us. We all need you, and we all love you so much.” Chloe began to cry, as Harm continued. “Baby, I love you so much. I can’t do this without you. I’ll be the best dad I can, but our girls need their mom, & I need my wife.” He took a breath. “I know that night of Chloe’s first date we picked out our kids names. Caroline Nicole was to be our daughters name. But I changed it a little. Caroline Faith. Mac, you had faith and hoped that everything would work out, please don’t be wrong. Please.” He began to sob. Chloe turned around and pulled her father to her in a fierce hug. *** Sarah Rabb, Trish & Frank all came as quickly as they could. They spotted Harriet, Bud, AJ & Sydney. Trish and Sydney shared a quick, but tight hug. “How’s my family?” Trish asked. AJ cleared his throat. “It doesn’t look good for Mac. The baby is doing ok, though.” “Where is Harm?” Sarah asked.” “In with Mac of course.” Sarah looked at Trish. I have to see him. Is it ok if I go first?” Trish nodded. “Yeah, I’m going to go see my grandchild.” She took Frank’s hand. “Come with me.” He nodded and they headed toward NICU. Trish opened the door, and her heart broke. Chloe was standing over the incubator, crying. She looked up and saw Trish and Frank. Sobbing, she ran to her grandmother. “Oh God.” She sobbed, as Trish held her. “The baby… I don’t want to like her. She’s responsible for my mom. I don’t want to like her, but I can’t help it.” Trish stroked her granddaughters head. “Ssh. It’ll be ok. Don’t cry, sweetie.” Frank walked over to the incubator and began to cry at the sight of his granddaughter. Chloe looked up, and noticed him. She pulled Trish over to him and the three of them wrapped their arms around one another and stared at the baby. *** “Honey.” Harm turned and saw his grandmother standing in the doorway. “Grams.” He whispered. “How is she?” Harm cleared his throat. “She’s not doing too good. But she’ll be ok. She has to. We have a daughter to raise together. And we have another one we have to finish raising. She’s not allowed to leave me.” His voice broke. “She promised me forever, Grams. How can she leave me?” He stood up, and he and Sarah embraced. “I know it hurts, Harm. I know.” He pulled back and covered his moth with his hand. “Oh Grams, I’m sorry. I didn’t think.” “Its ok.” She sat down in the chair next to his. “Sarah is strong. She is strong and she has so much to live for. Just keep praying Harm. Talk to her. Tell her about the baby. Prove to these damn doctors that technology isn’t everything. Show them that God, and love are just as important.” “I love her so much, Gram.” “I know sweetie. I know.” She leaned over and kissed his forehead. “How is the baby.” Harm smiled, as he did whenever anyone asked him about his new daughter. “She’s going to be fine. She’s small, but that’s about it. Her lungs, and brain are well developed. Eve thinks she should be able to go home in a week or two.” “Well that’s wonderful.” Sarah said. “What are y’all naming her?” Harm picked up Mac’s hand and played with her fingers. “We had decided on Caroline Nicole, but I made a slight change. I think Caroline Faith is a little more appropriate.” “That’s very pretty. I can’t wait to see her. Your mom and Frank are looking at her now, so I could be here with you.” *** Trish now sat with Harm. Chloe slept against Frank’s arm. Harriet had gone home to rest. She wasn’t doing much resting though. She called every hour. Finally, Bud went home to be with her. At eight months pregnant, he hated her being alone for two seconds. AJ & Sydney were in the chapel. Bobbie, Turner, Webb & Tiner had gone to pick up dinner for those who refused to leave. Chloe was dreaming. Her, her parents and Caroline were at Disney World. It was a beautiful day. Her mom was laughing, her dad was holding Caroline. It was perfect. Then, noise. Loud voices. Popping noises. She opened her eyes to see people with camera’s and microphones. Uncle AJ was in one mans face while Grandma Sarah took care of one of the others. “He is the Lieutenant Governor. This is news.” The nerdy man with the blonde hair and glasses tried to talk his way into speaking with Harm. Seeing Chloe was awake, Frank stood up and walked over to him. “Young man, my daughter in law is fighting for her life. My granddaughter was born two months earlier. Harm has barely left his wife’s side for 2 seconds all day unless he was with his daughters. This family is going through hell right now, and there is no way I’m going to let some bastard reporters cause any of these people anymore damage.” He looked past Frank. “That girl, That’s the older daughter right. “Miss, may I speak to you for a moment?” At that moment, Chloe’s face resembled that of a deer caught in headlights. Sydney pulled her close and wrapped her arms around her. AJ treated the man with a “Webb”. “Ow! My nose.” “Get the hell out of here.” Frank said. “You will not cause my family anymore harm.” The security guards finally showed up and escorted the reporters out of that particular waiting area. Frank then turned to Chloe and Sydney. “Chloe, are you okay?” Before she could respond, they heard commotion coming down the hallway, running towards them, Eve leading the group. Once the door was open, Chloe and Frank could hear the machine flat lining. “Oh God!” Chloe sobbed. She fell to the floor, Pulling Frank down with her. She sat there sobbing, as Frank held her. He looked towards the room, where Harm and Trish held each other, both in prayer. “Our father who art in Heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread….” AJ, Sydney and Frank began to pray with Sarah. “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.” End Part 4 *** I don’t know Harm’s grandfathers name. I read it was Peter in some fics, so I’m going with that. Part 5 Harm and Trish stepped numbly out into the lobby, while the doctors worked on Mac. Chloe saw her father and ran to him. He latched on to her like she was his only lifeline. He dropped his head on to hers. “I can’t lose her.” He whispered. *** Nothing but white. It was beautiful. Mac walked around. Trying to figure out where she was. The next thing she saw made her already weak heart almost stop. “Oh God.” Peter and Harmon Rabb Sr. approached her. “Hello Sarah.” Peter said, with a soft, nostalgic smile. Harm Sr. smiled. “Mac. I’ve been waiting so long to see you.” “Am I in heaven?” Harm shook his head. “No. Not yet. But unless you start fighting a little bit harder, you’ll be up here with us, instead of down there with your girls and my son.” “My girls?” Mac said with a smile. “The baby is a girl?” “Yep.” Peter said with a proud smile. “My great granddaughter. Caroline Faith Rabb. My Sarah is going to love spoiling that little angel.” He took a few steps. “Look.” Mac looked where he was and gasped as she saw her daughter. “She’s so tiny. She’s beautiful.” “Harm is already taken by her. He’s wrapped around that tiny finger already. Chloe loves her already. She’ll have a hard time showing love for a while, but she does love her.” Harm said. “Chloe doesn’t have a hard time showing love.” Peter sighed. “Mac, if you stay up here with us, she will. You mean more to her then anything. Until today, you are the only person in her life who’s never let her down.” “How do I get back to them?” “You have to wake up.” Harm simply said. “Let my boy see those big brown eyes he fell so in love with.” He smiled sadly and looked at her. “Sarah, my son has never been as happy as he is when he’s with you. If you die, he’ll never get over it. He’ll be as good of a father as he can be, but he’ll never truly love again. He’ll never marry again. He’ll throw himself into his work. If you die, Chloe and Caroline will lose both parents.” Mac’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t want to die. I want to go to heaven one day, but not yet. I want to…” She sighed and smiled. “I want to die an old lady, warm in my bed. Not here, not this night, not like this.” She laughed at Peter and Harm’s confused expressions. “My favorite movie, TITANIC. Its… never mind. I don’t want to be up here for about 50 years. Please let me go back to Harm and my daughters.” “Tell Mom, Harm & Trish and the girls that I love them.” Harm whispered, tears welling in his eyes, as well as in Mac’s. He leaned over and kissed her cheek.” “Tell Sarah the two of us will be together soon. And tell Harm I’m so proud of him. I love him so much. And tell you daughters that their great grandfather loves them and is watching over them.” The tears slid down Mac’s face and her and Peter shared a tight hug. “Thank you.” She whispered. “Close your eyes.” Harm said. *** Eve adjusted the IV and made a note on her chart. “Harm.” Eve turned and looked at her patient. “Harm.” The voice was hoarse whisper, but it was that of Mac. Eve dropped the clipboard. “oh God, Mac. Mac. Can you hear me?” She groaned. “Yeah. I.. Harm. I need Harm.” Eve started to cry. “Ok sweetie. Let me check you really quick, then I’ll get Harm for you.” She checked her vitals. Everything was as it should be. She was amazed. Nothing like this had ever happened before. It was a miracle. “I’m going to get Harm.” Eve walked out to the lobby. Harm was sitting with his mother. He had her head on his shoulder. “Where’ Chloe?” she asked. Harm stood up. “Her boyfriend showed up, and he talked Chloe into going into the cafeteria for some food. Is.. Did Mac.. What’s wrong?” Eve smiled. “She woke up. And she’s asking for…” Harm was out of his seat and in his wife’s room before Eve could finish her sentence. “Sarah.” He whispered. She opened her eyes. “Hey.” He smiled, “Hey yourself. I missed you.” “I’ve only been out for a day.” “The longest day of my life. You’re awake. I can’t believe it. God, I love you so much.” She smiled. “I love you too. You, Chloe, and our new daughter.” She paused for a minute. “Caroline Faith.” Harm’s eyes widened. “How do you know about her middle name. Could you really hear me talking to you?” She shook her head as best she could. “Your dad told me. Harm, I was almost in Heaven. And..” “Ssh.” Harm whispered. “Don’t over exert yourself. We can talk later.” He brought a hand to her forehead and brushed the dark locks off of her face. “No. I want to talk now.” She sighed as she adjusted herself. “I saw your father, and your grandfather. They showed me our baby. She’s beautiful. And they told me that unless I started fighting, I would watch you and my daughters from up there, instead of living with you down here.” “You were with my dad & my grandfather.” Her own eyes welled up, as she saw his do the same. “They are both proud of you. And they both love you so much. Peter told me that…” She closed her eyes. Maybe her husband didn’t need to hear that right now. “Never mind. I am kinda tired.” “Giving birth and almost dying has a tendency to do that to a person.” *** Chloe and Charlie walk back to the lobby, her hand twined tightly with his. Before they got to the rest of her family, he stopped walking and pulled Chloe close to him. “You know I love you right.” She softened. “I thought we said we were to young to say those words.” He smiled. “Considering we’ve been dating for almost two years, I feel pretty comfortable saying it. I can’t help how I feel. I love you, Chloe. And no matter what, I’ll be here for you.” Tears began to fall again. “I love you too.” He stepped closer and tipped her face to meet his. He gently kissed her. Once they parted, they smiled at each other and joined hands again, walking to her family. She approached them, and saw her father was gone. Trish and Sarah were embracing, tears running freely. “Oh God.” Chloe whispered. She squeezed Charlie’s hand as her grandmother stood up. “Mom died didn’t she.” Before she could stop herself, she began to sob. Trish lay a hand on her granddaughter’s shoulder. “Sweetie, she woke up.” “What?” AJ smiled. “She woke up about 10 minutes ago. Your dad is in there with her.” Chloe let go of Charlie’s hand and ran to her mothers room. She stopped dead in her tracks, when she saw her mother’s eyes open, and her father smiling once again. “Mom.” She whispered. Then, she ran to the bed. Her father wrapped an arm around her waist. Tears once again filled Mac’s eyes. “Chloe. I love you so much.” Chloe pulled out of her father’s grasp and she leaned down to kiss her mother. “I love you too, Mom.” *** The day went on pretty quickly. Mac was so happy to be surrounded by her friends and family. The next day came quickly, but something was missing. As Eve examined her, Mac sighed discontentedly and lay back against the pillows. “What’s wrong?” Eve asked with a smile. “Harm been gone all of 10 minutes?” “Ha-Ha.” Mac sighed again. “He took Chloe to school and went to shower and stuff. Eve, I want to see my baby.” “So that’s why you’ve been so cranky.” Mac smiled. “This baby… I have to see her. I have to see for myself that she’s okay and she’s really here.” Eve adjusted her IV. “Mac, sweetie, you’re too weak to be taken to her, and she’s so tiny that we can’t risk the infection of bringing her in here.” “I need to see her.” “I’m guessing a picture wont satisfy you.” “No.” “I’ll see what I can do.” Eve said as she smiled at her patient and walked out of the room. Mac was flipping aimlessly through the TV when someone knocked on her door. “Come in.” Sarah Rabb opened the door and walked in. “Darling, how are you?” She smiled. “Grams. I’m doing great. How are you?” “I’m fine. Honey, Harm told us that you were in ‘pre-heaven’.” Grams smiled. She looked at her hands. “I don’t know really how to say this, but when you told us what Harm and Peter had said, I got the feeling you were holding something back.” “Why do you think that?” Mac asked nervously. “Because you looked at me, opened your mouth, and then closed it. You waited a moment before talking to Trish. Peter said something important didn’t he.” Mac’s eyes filled with tears. “Yeah.” She whispered. “He said, ‘Tell Sarah we’ll be together soon.’” Mac began to cry, as her grandmother gave her a hug. “I’m going to miss you so much.” Grams smiled, “Oh honey, I’m just so glad I lived to see my grandson marry the love of his life. I’m so blessed I got to know one granddaughter, and I got to live to see another brought into this world. Darling, I’ve had a life, so blessed, that I only think its somewhat fitting. I’m going to be leaving this world as new life are coming in. Caroline, and soon Harriet’s baby. My life has been so full of emotion. Some sad, some joyful. But I’ve lived it to the fullest. There has always been one thing missing though. And when my life is over, I’ll be with the missing piece.” “I love you.” Mac whispered, leaning forward to embrace the older woman. “Oh, I love you too.” Sarah kissed her granddaughter forehead and smiled. “Sweetie, don’t tell the others about what Peter said. I want to spend our time left without them waiting for me to die.” Mac was about to respond when a knock on the door interrupted them. “This place is grand central station today.” She joked. “Come in.” Her face lit up as her husband walked in. “Hey. How’s Chloe?” Harm smiled and leaned in to kiss her, handing her a bouquet of beautiful peach roses. “Harm, they’re beautiful. You bring me roses every time you come in here. You’re spoiling me. I may have to almost die more often.” He kissed her again. “Don’t even think about it.” He looked up and smiled. “Hey Grams.” “Hey sweetheart. How are you?” “Better now that two of my favorite girls are here, both are alive.” Somehow he missed the look that his wife and grandmother exchanged. “Hey.” Eve said poking her head in the door, “I have surprise for you.” She pushed the door open and pushed in a wheelchair. “Wow. A wheelchair. Just what I always wanted.” Mac smiled. “What’s this about?” “Hop in.” Eve said. “Rumor has it that your husband has been gallivanting around this hospital with a younger woman. I thought you’d like to meet your competition.” Mac gasped, and harm leaned over and took her hand. “Lets go marine.” She was helped out of the bed and into the wheelchair. Eve let Harm push it, as she and Grams followed them to the NICU. Eve opened the door for them and Harm brought the wheelchair to a stop in front of their daughters incubator. “Sarah, our daughter. Caroline Faith Rabb.” “I talked to the head of the department. She’s doing extremely well. Dr. Romanov said that you could hold her for a few minutes.” Mac gasped and looked at Eve, nodding enthusiastically. Harm wheeled her over to the sink so she could sterilize her hands and arms. He did the same and they slipped on the protective coverings. He helped her back into the wheelchair. Eve gently picked up the baby and placed her in her mothers waiting arms. “Oh Harm. She’s beautiful.” “She looks like you.” She smiled. “My looks, your brains.” Grams grinned at Harm. “God help us all.” “Hey sweetie.” Mac said. “I’m your mommy. I love you so much.” She looked up at Harm. “So does your daddy, and your big sister Chloe. You are going to have a wonderful life. I promise.” “We all will.” Harm said. He leaned down to kiss her, and stroked his daughters cheek. “Looks like this fairy tale had a happy ending.” *** THE END ***
