"Hello?" Then to make it more complicating to talk on the phone the doorbell rang-"It's open!" trusting it was Harm. "Yes, is this Lt. Colonel Sarah MacKenzie?" the person on the other end of the phone line asked. "Hi." Harm whispered as he creeped in the door and took the pot top from her and put it on the steaming lobster. "Yes, this is Sarah MacKenzie." "Hello, this is Dr. Fredrick Houston. I practice in Nashville, Tennessee and I'm your mother's regular physician. I always hate giving this kind of news," the doctor muttered under his breath, "your mother, Deanne, has became ill, she had a serious case of pneumonia and she has be asking for you and our hospital has just been able to track you down. But we, she would greatly appreciate it." "Exactly where is your hospital in Nashville," Mac asked not really wanting to see her mother, but she and some time on the books and needed a vacation. "If you decide to come see your mother, I will personally see to it that there is a...person from the hospital at the airport," the doctor replied not really answering her question. Harm was in the back of her picking at the garlic bread she had prepared. "Stop that," she slapped his hand, he just laughed and kissed her forehead,"Just tell me when to be there." The line was quiet for a while, he must be discussing it with someone. "Tomorrow at noon, if that's OK with you," he said hastily. "That's fine." She said and hung up the phone. "Well, my mother is sick....in Nashville." She said and turned to look at Harm. "You don't sound to upset-" he was cut off by- "You know the relationship between me and my mother, if she even deserves to be called a mother." "Now, Mac....", he said sarcastically and gave her a hug. Mac realized that Harm had been extra nice to her lately. Had Sturgis slipped and said something to him. Remembering that day in her office where she first said she loved Harm, but not to him, to Sturgis. No, Sturgis is pretty tight lipped. Maybe.....now, MacKenzie he's your partner-but....she let her thoughts trail of to nowhere. Not realizing Harm was still holding her. "The lobster!!!"she exclaimed. "Whoa hold on I turned it off for ya jarhead." He said jokingly. "Thanks stickboy." she said teasing him. He look into her eyes. He realized that he couldn't take his eyes off of her. She was just so beautiful and elegant even in jeans and a T-shirt. "Harm?" Mac said "Wanna eat?" "Sure!" He said watching her get the plates. "Hey, will you fix some tea for me and whatever you want, you can have.......to-" she stopped noticing him starring at her. She fought off the urge to jump in his arms and shower him in her kisses. He wanted her, all of her, her faults, her extraordinary ability to tell the exact time wherever she may be, he body, her lips and then he couldn't fight the urge any longer-"Sarah" startling himself and her with the use of her first name he continued, "I...I want to......" "You wanna...what?" she asked carefully. "I...wanna..." he hesitated, "eat now." AHHHHHH! he screamed inside at himself-Rabb next time you get the chance-kiss her! That's an order! "OK..." she sounded disappointed. Mac turned away to fix their plates and Harm grabbed her and didn't say anything , Mac tried to speak but her words were muffled, because their lips were pressed together. She returned the kiss and she melted into his arms. She never wanted to pull away but she had to. "Harm, I have to call the Admiral." She said regretting. "Now???" he wined. He knew she had to and released his grip. "Thank you," she said and flashed him a melting smile. Mac picked up the phone and dialed the Admiral's home phone number. "Admiral, my mother has fallen ill and I need....." There was a short pause. "Thank you, sir" "Did you get leave." Harm asked. He wanted so desperately to go with her. "Do you want me to go with you?" Harm asked very carefully. "I don't know if the Admiral could spare both of us with gone and all." It wasn't a no or a yes. I guess it up to me and the Admiral if I go or not. Washington D.C. Airport Washington D.C. 9:45 AM "Ms. MacKenzie you can take you seat now." Mac nodded her head and walked to the plane. There was a seat next to a man reading a newspaper and she felt a sensation that made her feel protected. She knew it was Harm. "Hey gorgeous!" Mac said teasing him. Harm, or the man she thought was Harm, put down the newspaper and looked at her like she was crazy. "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else." "Apparently" the man said rudely. Mac heard a snicker from behind her. She turned around quickly. She tried giving him an icy glare but it was melted by his hotshot smile. She quickly slid into the seat behind her and punched him. "Owww, what was that for?" he said teasing her. "You....I....I knew you were going to be here, I just made a mistake...." She paused and read his facial _expression, "Of course, Harmon Rabb, Jr. wouldn't know anything about making mistakes." She teased. "You're right, he wouldn't!" Harm said smiling his trademark flyboy grin. She poked him in his side. "OWWW! What was that for?" he asked rubbing his side. "Something you'll do later." Mac responed. Warner Brothers Recording Studios Nashville, Tennessee 11:30 am Three women, Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Riley Hill-McGraw, sat recording a song Riley had written for her new album. The mixer on the other side of the glass buzzed in- "That was great!" Tim McGraw said, "Let's go-hold on phone call!" The was a pause. Tim buzzed back in- "Can y'all come out here for a minute." The three women took off the headphones and Riley realized that Martina and Faith were so much alike even though Faith was only a little older than Martina and way older than she was. Not that either one of them was old. Riley was just kind of young, 20, she guessed is pretty young comparing yourself to you mother. Then Tim spoke softely and carefully. "There's a doctor on the phone and he would like to speak to Riles." Riley swallowed loudly and took the phone from Tim. "Yes, this is Riley Hill-McGraw........Umm..yes........OK hold on please.....Faith, Martina, Tim can we continue tomorrow? There's something I have to do." They all shook their heads 'yes' but Martina was the first to answer- "Sure, it sounds important and remember you can always call." She winked, smiled and left. "Dr. Houston, I'm back and that's fine." Riley replied. She hit the off button. Her parents shot out questions such as- "Who was that?" "What did they want?" "Is something wrong?" "How can I help?" Riley calmly answered, "That was Dr. Fredrick Houston, he works at the local hospital and he has a patient that would like to see me," she swallowed loudly and continued, "the patient is on their death bed and isn't contagious," then slowly," may I go?" Faith and Tim looked at each other and in unison- "Yes." "Thank you" she said and grabbed her car keys and left. Riley was confused and was really nervous. She had gone distances for fans, but she'd never gone to a hospital before. In the Air Over Nashville Nashville, Tennessee 11:45 "This is your captain speaking, we will be landing at the airport soon, so please fasten your seat belt and securer all loose items." Then the flight attendant came over the loud speaker. "Lt. Colonel Sarah MacKenzie please listen up," Mac sat up in her seat,"When we land and you get off the plane look for a man with a, "she started laughing," a big, funny, bald man with a sign that says 'your name.'" The whole plane burst into laughter. Harm looked at Mac and kissed her forehead. Nashville Airport-Baggage Claim Nashville, Tennessee 12:03 PM (According to Mac) "Well, where's the big, funny, bald man?" Mac looked back at Harm as she picked up her bags. "Here I am-Sarah MacKenzie?" he asked, she started laughing when she saw his sign-it said 'Your Name' like the flight attendant said it would. "Yes, that's me and this is my partner-Lt. Commander Harmon Rabb Jr.-" "Or Harm for short." Harm finished her sentence. "Well, let's get you over to the hospital." The funny man said. "I'm Dr. Lieman." he walked them to his car and they sat in the back seat. The radio was playing a country station and Mac figured almost everybody in Nashville listens to country. "Dr. Lieman," Harm started,"What exactly is wrong with Deanne?" "I don't know, I'm not assigned to her case." Dr. Lieman replied briefly. When they arrived at the hospital the doctor took them up to the third floor and to the nurses station and they asked what room Mac's mother was in and just as they were walking off, Harm turned around and saw a young girl walk quickly up and ask for the same room. "Are you family?" One of the nurse's asked her, just as the had Mac and him before. The woman answered- "No, but-" the nurse cut her off. Then a doctor walked up to the nurse's station and looked at the young woman. Then he did a double take- "Riley Hill-McGraw?" the doctor asked the young woman. "Yes, that's me," sounding frustrated she continued, " Ms. Deanne MacKenzie requested me to see her." Then Mac had started listening. "Excuse me, how do you know my mother?" Mac asked a little curious. "I don't know her, ma'am" Riley said looking at her with respect. Riley felt a home with this woman, even though she didn't know her name. Little did she know, Mac felt an ease when she called her ma'am and she felt like she knew her. Even though she only new her first name-correction, marine-first and last name. "Are you going down there now?" Mac asked. "Ummm....yeah," she turned to the doctor and the nurse," Is that OK?" The doctor smiled and started to introduce himself- "I'm Dr. Fredrick Houston, I spoke with both of you on the phone." "Doctor, I hope you don't mind I brought my partner-Lt. Commander Harmon Rabb Jr. or Harm for short." Mac introduce her "partner." "Name sure roles off your tongue" the nurse said. Riley snickered, she tried to hide, she failed. They looked at her and all busted out laughing. "Let's go to Deanne's room." Dr. Houston said still giggling. Riley, Harm, and Mac walked down the hall with the doctor to room 387. "We're a 44 minute late." Riley said. Mac and Harm turned around and looked at her wrist-no watch. At he same time Harm and Mac's jaws dropped!!!! "How did you do that?" The doctor asked. "It's my secert..." she let him wonder. "Riley, whoa....." Mac was speechless for the first time ever. Harm helped her loss of language. "Did you know that Mac, Sarah can also do that time thing?" They had arrived at Room 387. "Wow, what a coincidence," she said to Harm, and to Mac, "You're the only person I know that can do that. But I'm still not sure you can do it. " She said suspiciously. "Time on three...ready" Mac said. Three seconds later. "12:51:06 Eastern Standard Time" The said in unison. "Hold on...you didn't even count-"The doctor said. "It's in my head-" Riles said "and mine." Mac continued. They went into the room. Deanne was lying there awake. "I thought I heard voices." Deanne's first words to her daughter. "Sarah, I've missed you and you to Riley." Deanne said confusing everyone in the room. "Mom, what are you talking about?" Mac asked, speaking for everyone. "Let me explain-take a seat please," she said taking and deep breath and motioning to the three chairs in the room. "I'll leave you to yourselves." Dr. Houston said. Mac took a seat and Riley did the same. Harm just stood there feeling out of place. "Sarah, I left you when you were 13 and I've regretted that ever since. We talked about that when Joel died. But there was something I didn't tell you when we talked. I traveled for a while and you know that. But the thing that I didn't tell you was that I got remarried and he was in the Marines, too. He was killed in Desert Storm, but we had a child-" she was cut off by Riley as she stood up- "I don't mean to be rude, but do you want me to sing for you or..."she let her sentence trail off. "Please, sit down and listen," Riley sat down and smiled, "we had a child and.........," she paused and a tear ran down her cheek and Mac took a deep breath. Mac reached over and wiped it off. As she was, Deanne looked Mac in her eyes then quickly looked at Riley. Riley and Mac gasped, she was speechless, when she tried to talk she just stumbled over her words- "Momma," Mac started crying. Harm ran over to her and took her hand. "Momma is she....?" She didn't finish, Deanne's head nodded right before her eyes closed and she took her last breath. Riley looked at the lifeless body and hit the nurse call button, then broke down and cried. Mac looked over at her she looked so alone, through her tears she reached out her hand and smiled- "My sister..." Riley took her hand and the nurse that had questioned them and Dr. Houston came in. "She's gone," he said taking her vital signs. "They know," Harm said, "we know." "I have to pronounce her dead-time?" He replied. "1:17:24," Riley and Mac said in together. "Now I know why we both can keep up with time so well." Riley said. "Harm, can you get me a...." she didn't finish, he was already out of the door. The doctors left wheeling their Mom out of Room 387. Mac and Riley stood up as they went by them. "Can we talk?" Riley asked, "We can go to my house." Riley said as they were walking out of the door. Harm was coming back with three sodas. Mac and Riley took one each and Harm walked with them silently. As they walked by the nurse's station, a nurse asked them what to do with her body. "Should we sent it to a crematory or a morgue? She didn't have it specific in her will..." Riley and Mac looked at each other and said at the same time different things. "Cremate her." Mac said. "Bury her." Riley said. They looked at each other and then Mac said- "I don't have enough money to pay for a funeral." "I can pay for it." Riley offered. "You don't know her that well and I would want to-" "She's my mom and I have lots of money-I want to use if for something good and this is it." "OK" Mac excepted. Harm's jaw dropped, she just beat Mac with no effort at all. Stop it Rabb-she's mourning. "Sent her to the county morgue." Her voice shook. Harm looked at her and they embraced. Riley could see the sparks between them. Just then as Riley was passing that thought through her head Tim and Faith walked up behind her. "What happened?" Faith asked holding Riles's chin then she saw the tears and gave her a hug. "Oh, honey..." Tim rubbed her back. "I love you." he sang. Riley and Sarah stood in their loved one's arms and sobbed. Riley finally looked into Faith's eyes and said- "She....she...she was my mother." Then she started crying all over again. She looked over at Mac. Mac felt someone looking at her and she let go of Harm. "Riley..."Mac tried to start but she was to weak. They embraced for the first time as sisters. Tim and Faith suddenly understood. They were sisters, she had found her real family. Her heart beats differently now, Faith thought.
